Greg1138 3 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 You know - this has been getting my goat for some time now - and hopping on the boards this morning I have seen another couple of examples which now prompt me to actually write something. These boards have always been a fun community - somewhere where anyone can post opinions, debate points of view, have a laugh and (virtually) spend time among other like-minded people in a mature environment. However, over the past few months I have noticed an increasing number of users desperate to leap upon the first tiny mistake, run with it and make reading a thread (and, no doubt for the target, posting again) very uncomfortable. There is a one-upmanship (and a tendency to jump on the bandwagon) at the moment among a very few users that is wholly unnecessary, sad, and just a tiny bit pathetic. Nothing that would be seen as going against the board rules, otherwise I dare say Marc would be excercising his trigger finger a lot more often - but nevertheless there are comments made that are just plain insidious and unnecessary.Yes. we all have our personalities and opinions, yes we all like an argument now and again, yes we occasionally have a bust-up - that's what life is about....but to deliberately go out of your way to pick on one small quirk/comment, make a user feel uncomfortable about posting and for other users to then jump pathetically on the bandwagon is just daft and childish in the extreme.I don't need to give examples - those users know who they are and a scan of a few threads will show others exactly what I am talking about. These boards used to be a really nice place to while away a couple of hours (or more on many occasions!). I have to say - for me (and others I am aware of) that is no longer the case. I dip in a fair bit, but this does not feel like the welcoming, pleasant commmunity it once was. However, there's no reason why it can't be if certain people just stop behaving in that manner. There is the old addage that "If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything"....that's a bit extreme for boards like this - but you get my point....there is a line, and is being crossed too often. With respect,Greg
Quintus 6,503 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 It's the quirky personality of this place which keeps me coming back. I suspect that is probably true for most regulars here.
Greg1138 3 Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 It's the quirky personality of this place which keeps me coming back. I suspect that is probably true for most regulars here.Indeed....don't get me wrong - what would life be like without some of the acerbic comments? How boring would it be without a good bust-up here and there? And so on and so on......Nothing at all wrong with quirky, but jumping on someone's back and others jumping on bandwagon, strawmanning, etc etc - especially when that person is a new poster - is just out of order. I look at the welcome reception I got when I joined, and look at the reception some get now, and I do wonder how the newer ones must feel sometimes. And this isn't just confined to comments made to new posters either.....I note one or two of the comments I have received recently......some people just need to look at what they write now and again and consider whether it is necessary to post it.....as I said - there's a line.....
Quintus 6,503 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Indeed, I should have added that I also agree with the points you raised, especially in regards to the oft clicky treatment of newcomers here. Having said that, I suspect a number of new members were long time lurkers before finally deciding to contribute, so for the most part they probably had a good idea of what to expect when they signed up.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,402 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 This is about me, isn't it?
Nick Parker 3,049 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 What is a "lurker", would you mind telling me? Is it a person who looks at this forum for a while before signing up?

John Crichton 4 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Can I just say, despite some good observations by my good buddy Greg,...

BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I lurked here since the days Harry Potter was the punching bag of choice, in the ye-olde 2002/2003 years. So I ask, how have things changed? We just have a bigger community with more annoying people.

Quintus 6,503 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Which is why I feel totally great being a Peter Jackson loyalist. He didn't let his massive fanbase down - he made a near perfect trilogy. Ain't gonna happen with The Hobbit either, since Del Toro is on board. It just keeps getting better, especially for all the Lucas haters out there. Hehe...!I actually feel a little bit sorry for all the Star Wars apologists out there. Trying their best to find enjoyment in the latest piece of sh*t George exacts upon their confused souls. Bless 'em!Quint/TGE - NOT trying to hijack the thread... honest.

BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 There is nothing band-wagony about hating Lucas's works.Unless you're serious deconstructionist.
Vaderbait1 1 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Jackson didn't let his fan base down because the only previous films they could relate to to form expectations were crappy kids cartoons.
Quintus 6,503 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 What the hell has that got to do with three very friggin' good movies?

crocodile 9,725 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I've seen a lot more hostile places than this one. Which doesn't mean some new people can't feel a bit... uncomfortable. That was one of the reasons why I stayed away from this place for some time. But it has more to do with certain sense of humor than anything else, I guess.Karol
Docteur Qui 1,581 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I certainly see some of the points being made. I myself am guilty of jumping on the proverbial bandwagon to appear with the crowd. However, that's part of life. I'm now able to support my own opinions without seeking the approval of others and no longer assume a stance on a topic or opinion without knowing all, if any of the facts. It's mostly harmless when it happens, but I do disagree with the hostile reactions certain individuals have towards different thinkers or new members. I remember thinking Blu's posts were a breath of fresh air when he was the biggest target for abuse. I disagreed with a lot of his opinions, but admired his outspokenness in such a climate. It really shook things up for the board, for the better I felt.At any rate, I generally feel welcome here and try my hardest to do the same for others. But we all have our limits and I can get very impatient with some people and their posts. My fault, not theirs.

But it's natural for things to change, for better or for worse, and I just find myself posting and participating less.

King Mark 3,977 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Well, you never know how people react to your post however benign you think they are.Miguel took comments of some aspects of Williams music as personal insults and won't speak to me anymore after years of friendly communication and left the board. So go figure how people take things. Vosk left because of one arguement in a thread. Gkgyver left because of one thread that morally offended him

BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 There are far worse things than silly little arguments on a message board.Exactly, and even so when I get into a heated debate, I always go in assuming, or at least hoping that the other person recognizes that it is not personal, and it is a silly argument, but a fun excercise nonetheless.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Well yeah, people really shouldn't let themselves get upset about some asshole on a message board. I post less because I don't find it as fun and interesting around here in general. But then of course there are posts like this:Well get the hell out then. Wuss....which are always pleasant to read!
