Tanglewood on Parade... With Williams?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,
I just happened to be checking the Tanglewood schedule for this summer to see if the new Williams piece would be broadcast on the radio and I looked at the schedule for Tanglewood on Parade which seems to have changed again. It's quite confusing in that the artist line up does not show an appearance by Williams, but when you look at the program itself, it clearly says " John Williams- Conductor". Contacted the Bso and they were useless as always. Can anyone confirm or deny?

I don't want to burst the bubble of anyone, but I would be very surprise if John Williams conducts again, at least for complete concerts.

When was the last time he conducted in public? In october 2014?

The insiders say he's fine, he all blocked up with Star Wars as I've heard tell. Although I've heard on the podium he's just find. It might just be the long distance travel

So the final word is Yes, he's expected to be there for Tanglewood on Parade according to someone at the BSO

Well, "expected" like in "Keep buying tickets", that means nothing more, nothing less!

Yeah that really annoys me. Im almost positive they knew he wasnt going to be there for film night in boston but they didnt want to lose the ticket sales. They also mention that " the schedule and artists appearances are always open to change".

Well, they can't guarantee Williams or anyone will be at any given concert. Things happen. What else are they going to say? As of now, he's expected to be present.

I also doubt Williams will be conducting any concerts this summer

He just had a back injury, why risk hurting it again while he's still working on Star Wars

That's probably for the best. He deserves the rest.

Looks like the page was updated again with a more specific program:

BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, ANDRIS NELSONS, conductor
BERLIOZ Roman Carnival Overture
RAVEL Pavane for a Dead Princess
SHOSTAKOVICH "Romance" from The Gadfly
SHOSTAKOVICH "Galop" from Cheryomushki
TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER ORCHESTRA, STÉPHANE DENÈVE, conductor, TAMARA SMIRNOVA, violin soloist
JOHN WILLIAMS Sound the Bells!
JOHN WILLIAMS Slow movement of Violin Concerto (Tamara Smirnova, soloist)
JOHN WILLIAMS JUST DOWN WEST STREET...on the left
BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA, KEITH LOCKHART, conductor
KABALEVSKY Overture to Colas Breugnon
"Old Blues Eyes at 100", a tribute to Frank Sinatra
FISCHER-NESTICO "Chicago"
MYROW/GORDON-OSSEER "You Make Me Feel So Young
MANN-SCHWARTZ "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning"
KANDER/EBB-BYERS "New York, New York"
BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA, JOHN WILLIAMS, conductor
WILLIAMS "Princess Leia's Theme" and "Throne Room and Finale" from Star Wars
BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER ORCHESTRA, ANDRIS NELSONS, conductor
TCHAIKOVSKY 1812 Overture

I'll be attending the concert, so I'm crossing my fingers that this is accurate and JW will be there.

Tanglewood on Parade is a different concert from Tanglewood Film Night, which is the concert Stefan and I are going to

They updated the concert program with less than a month to go and Williams is on it. I think it is a virtual lock that he will be in Lenox from early August until after film night.

I would bet there will be another week or so scoring session in LA before he goes as well.

Too bad I'm working and can't drive down after work that Tuesday night. Looks like an even better program than Film Night. I attended the "On Parade" concert a few years ago and John Williams had the honor of conducting the Tchaikovsky 1812!

Because you have the full forces of both the BSO (professional) and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (students) combined on stage plus canons on the lawn at your disposal for one of the most epic pieces in the repertoire. For the TMC fellows, performing under JW's baton was certainly the highlight of their summer (2010, I think).

Of course, most attendees take the piece completely of out context... because nothing says 'AMERICA' like the Russians whooping the French! Lol.
