I posted this in another thread, but perhaps it belongs here

JJ talks about JW and the score (starting at the 13:16 mark):

The end credits include Rey's Theme, the Resistance theme and Kylo Ren's theme. Also, Leia's theme and the Force theme are heard in the score. The end credits is nearly 8 minutes long

Good, for some reason its rare lately for the villain themes to appear in end credits, a lot of times its just a suite of the good guy themes.

I'm ready to hear 1/3 rd of it

Of course all those themes in the End Credits will be repeated elsewhere on the c.d. as individual concert versions

So we have End Credits+ Cellar Song already wasting space

I'm happy for the End Credits to be omitted from the OST because it can just be ripped cleanly from the Bluray, to help make room for more original music from the film itself.

But we all know that won't happen!

The end credits include Rey's Theme, the Resistance theme and Kylo Ren's theme. Also, Leia's theme and the Force theme are heard in the score

Here's the full transcript:

Interviewer: Talk about the importance of the music in this film.

J.J. Abrams: When I think of the things that George Lucas did and got right, and got perfectly in that first movie, it is so long and stunning to think of those things, but nothing on that list is more important than the music. That’s not to say there aren’t things that aren’t as important, but they aren’t more important. And what John Williams did, his gift to Star Wars and to fans, it is that you can’t oversell the importance of what he does. And to know that he was coming back to create a score for The Force Awakens was as exciting as any other aspect of working on this movie, for the very first discussion I had with Kathy Kennedy.

To be on the stage when John Williams conducted the Main Titles, which of course is familiar to everyone… that was incredible. But then, to watch him conduct and hear the orchestra play so beautifully the End Titles, the almost 8-minute long End Titles, was incredible. It starts the way it always starts, but then it goes into these themes, Rey’s Theme, the Resistance Theme, Kylo Ren’s Theme… these incredible tunes that we’d become accustomed to over the months of doing post-production… That was so beautiful, and soaring, and emotional, and powerful… and somehow perfectly integrated with the score and the music that we know: the Force Theme, Leia’s Theme… He just, like no one else, is able to take what we know and do something brand new, and somehow allow them to coexist. And I realized that’s what we’re trying to do all along.

I doubt all 5 themes are in the end credits, JJ was just referring more generally to returning themes in the film I think.

Although it wouldn't surprise me if The Force Theme or Leia's Theme are the final musical themes in the film. Nobody knows how the film ends though so it'll be a fun surprise!

Let's just hope JJ keeps the traditional music-only ending intact.

Just a detail: I don't think he said that Leia's theme and the Force theme are actually heard in the score. To me, what he said meant that the new themes are stylistically consistent with the musical language of the old themes. Anyway, the Force theme is literally the one theme that appears in every single score of the saga, including the prequels, so it has to appear here as well! How can the Force "awaken" without that theme?!

But we will see (and hear) in a few days :) !!!

Unfortunately, I share this view :( The shock with the Azkaban CD has left a strong mark on me, leading me to doubt everything.

Haven't seen this one posted. Not much new though:

You can't talk about Star Wars without talking about the music. What was it like for you, a lifelong John Williams fan, to hear him playing you the soundtrack for the first time?

"Unbelievable. I mean, unbelievable. There's John Williams playing me music on the piano, in his house, and I'm extrapolating it into what it's going to be when a 110-piece orchestra is going to be playing it. It's like seeing those old Abbey Road behind-the-scenes films of Paul McCartney playing a song to George Martin for the first time, and he's like playing the guitar but making a French horn noise, and you're like, "Oh my god, this moment is something historic." To say mind-blowing doesn't even touch the impossibility of it. Especially given that I grew up listening to his music, instead of downloading or watching DVDs or VHS tapes, because none of those things existed when I was a kid."

yup, still traumatized by PoA and RotS myself

Oh right! RotS was at least as traumatizing as PoA. But the whole thing had started with TPM, although at that time I was too young to predict all the implications and consequences.

JJ. Abrams keeps praising John Williams in a video here - http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/trailers/640099-cs-video-j-j-abrams-on-star-wars-the-force-awakens#/slide/1

[...] "When John, who is just the greatest person walking the face of the earth I think", when he said he would rather not write the music for this one particular scene..."

He talks about the song. Some new info about it "It wasn't orchestrated, there was no stepping up and recording it with the orchestra, we did it together".

At 2.05

JJ. Abrams names the binary sunset scene as one of his his favorite moments from the original movies and says that at least 51% of that scene is the music.
