Jay 41,544
Awesome video, helped by the fact that it's my favorite track on the CD. Some suggestions I have that could make it better: -Find a way to make it so that Bilbo putting the ring on and disappearing (currently shown at 1:49 in your video) happens when the music quiets down almost to silence (about 1:56 in your video). This would also fix how you currently have Smaug's Theme starting in the middle of a long CGI shot, which is probably not how it was scored.-Currently Bilbo starts running at about 2:39 in your video, but the msuic doesn't pick up the pace until 2:41... Shore probably would have intended the music to pick up right when he starts running.-The change in music at 2:57 also currently happens in the middle of a long shot (Bilbo with his back against the wall). I would guess the shot preceding it (all the coins flying towards the camera) was originally longer, and the change in music at 2:57 was meant to start on that shot of Bilbo. Love the way it ends! Dunno why PJ cut out that part. Overall, such a cool scene. It's the only time the dragon actually seems really big, and really menacing.

Jay 41,544
Dude, awesome! Great job on the re-done Inside Informatoin video! It's great! I love the way the music music quiets as Bilbo puts on the ring and Smaug's theme is slowly introduced as he is, how the music changes as soon as Bilbo starts to run, and how it changes again as soon as it comes to that shot of him against the wall. This is just awesome!

Jay 41,544
Good job on the Kingsfoil video - not much to say since it's a pretty straight forward affair.I think I prefer the film version of the healing scene, though the album version probably makes for a better ending the way Shore arranged the track. Incanus 5,848
Thumbs up BB! I love this Smaug material which rachets up the tension, keeps it all thematic and enhances his presence considerably in my opinion. The score gains a very breath-like pattern with the 2-chord device used for Smaug, which is another one of those Shoreisms where he likes to achieve such organic breathing quality with his music. Jay 41,544
There is a segue from one cue to another at 0'18 on the OST. No there isn't. 0:00-3:12 of the OST track is all one cue. The only reason the "We feed it to the pigs" scenes plays way earlier than the rest in the final cut is because PJ moved it there after scoring. 3'56 - 4'38: unused in the film. I had to speed up the footage a bit here to have the music end right when the arrow hits the Orc at 4'35 (which I think is where it was supposed to go). Yea, I think so too There are about 3 seconds of music at 4'38 in the film that doesn't appear on the OST, but I think that music was tracked (sounds too generic, a bit like the music for Legolas' entrance), and instead there was just meant to be silence (so I'd say a silence was shortened at 4'38 on the OST). That's tracked in from The Forest River. There's nothing missing from the 3:12-5:48 portion of the track, just as you say the shortened silence in the middle. 9'42 - End: unused in the film. I have no idea if it was indeed meant to score those shots or not (to me, it seems a bit too "action-ey" for those shots), but there is no edit at 9'42 on the OST. I shortened those two shots a wee bit, to have the music end right when Thorin sees Smaug. It absolutely was written for the shots of the dwarves in the hallway, I mentioned it a while ago on this board. Just coincidentally dialed out of the film AND removed from the Standard version of the track.
Barnald 404
Really don't know why they removed 6'58 - 7'38 and most of the music for the Bolg/Legolas scenes.
Jay 41,544
Agreed - like the Spider battles and Forest River Chase, those type of action scenes just play so much better with continuous music!

Jay 41,544
OK, I finally watched The Hunters video!! Another great job, I can't imagine anything here is wrong - and if it is, it certainly looks fine to me! Very enjoyable video to watch Now, to comment on what PJ chose to remove from the final cut of the film: -I can't believe PJ mucked with the great transition from Bard to Smaug back to Bard again from about 1:00-1:35! It all just flows so much better with the music playing through as shown in your video. Bah! -The attack on the children from about 3:55-4:35 plays much better with music too! Really amps up the intensity of the scene! -Why dial out the music from 6:55-7:40 as the dwarves run out and Smaug taunts them? I mean it isn't terrible with no music, but it keeps the flow of everything going when left in. -The entire Bolg/Legolas battle should have been scored! It's silly to remove the music from about 7:50-8:15 and about 8:25-9:15! Lame! I hated the sound of the Bolg/Leggy duel in the theater with just grunted and clanging and scuffling and no music. Bah! -9:45-end hallway run - hey I like it with music!

Jay 41,544
1'25 - 1'38: unused in the film. I dunno why PJ dialed this out.... 2'46 - 3'02: unused in the film. So that little flute bit was entirely meant to Bilbo talking, eh? LOL. I guess I can see why PJ took all this music out, but still, it keeps the flow going leaving it in! The bit from 5'06 to 5'16 was microedited in the film for some reason. A really bad idea from PJ. The full performance of Smaug's Theme here is badass! 5'35 - 6'05: unused in the film. Clearly meant to go there. Yea, I dunno what PJ was thinking here either. The scene didn't need Smaug's theme, the non-thematic original version Shore wrote makes more sense. Jay 41,544
An odd choice. Maybe he recorded it just for the album, knowing it'd be dialed out in the film.
Incanus 5,848
Another great video! PJ was a fool to leave so much Shore goodness out of the film. As I said before, as a fan of Smaug's music, the score gives him so much more character, menace and adds to the tension brilliantly.

MedigoScan 341
I am pretty sure the bit from 0:15-0:25 is used in the filmand it plays when Thorin starts his wheelbarrow adventurethough for some reason they flipped the first bit with the second bit, and either way that places it right in front of the 0:49-1:18 bitso that might just be tracking again

MedigoScan 341
actually what I meant is that the start of that video you posted sounds exactly like the bit that starts 15 seconds in on the album track, not the beginning partthe part that comes right after does seem to be a modified version of the music from 8 seconds in on the album track (and they use that later on as well, 20 seconds into that video)though yes its placement there doesnt make much sense

It's not like you have to read everything. Just check the particular part you're interested in...And no, there is no unreleased music at 2'56.Well, I actually did read it, and I didn't see it mentioned, but I knew that I could have overlooked it accidentally, so that is why I asked. And are you sure? there is in my edit, if there is no unreleased music, where did it come from, does it come in earlier, is it tracked? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxQSwI5aPja9UTlfbVUzOXdfWm8/edit?usp=sharing

Jay 41,544
The microedits in My Armor Is Iron are at:0:250:39somewhere during 0:43-0:49 (As BB pointed out, this buildup is longer in the film)0:491:182:51 (silence shortened here, not missing music)3:
MedigoScan 341
I still think it sounds more like the 0:15 butbut regardless, seeing as how the music that comes after it is used twice and probably is the music that was microedited out at either 0:25 or 1:18, that means that whole wheelbarrel section in the movie is full of tracking/swapping themes around
Jay 41,544
I believe the lighting of the forges via Smaug's fire breath was meant to be unscored, with "My Armor Is Iron" starting as the dwarves move forward and Thorin tells Bombur to get the billows working, etc.

Incanus 5,848
It seems to work quite well BB taking into account that there is some guess work on how this version lines up with the film. This has nothing to do with your work but as I have said before that more you watch this sequence the sillier it feels. A whole lot of flailing and ruckus and not a lot of substance. Again the only good thing to come out of it was this music.

Incanus 5,848
Yep. The choral material in the last minute is particularly superb. Haunting stuff. Shore's choral writing at its finest.Yes! It is absolutely superb as a standalone moment and as an eerie harbinger of what is to come in the final film. I love how Shore old fashionedly catches Smaug's spiralling swirling flight as he sheds the gold and flies towards Esgaroth. This has nothing to do with your work but as I have said before that more you watch this sequence the sillier it feels.perhaps some benny hill music would be appropriate? When a sort of serious fantasy film series has not one but two Benny Hill Yakety Sax moments in two consecutive films, you know something has gone terribly wrong.
