The Chronological Film Score Thread

It's too difficult given the length of the track times. For example, Black Smoke. There are two instances in the film where there is black smoke.

160 BPM is the first scene in the film, but I don't remember the music being as intense, or as long.

I Am Legend's order.

01. My Name Is Robert Neville

02. Deer Hunting

03. Evacuation

04. Scan Her Again

05. Darkseeker Dogs

06. Sam's Gone

07. Talk To Me

08. The Pier

09. Can They Do That?

10. The Jagged Edge

11. I'm Listening

12. I'm Sorry

13. Epilogue

14. Reunited

I think Reunited is what's played in the theatrical version for replacement of "I'm Sorry" from the alternate version.

OK, here's my first attempt at a chronological score. Now, granted, the new release of Airplane! is presented pretty much chronological already, but a couple of the source cues (and a few songs not on the CD) are not where they would be. I've done my best, using the script since I currently don't have access to my DVD of the film, so I could be wrong in places, but here goes...

1 Main Title (CD - 1)

2 Kiss Off (CD - 2)

3 Ambulance (CD - 3)

4 Hari Krishna/Ticket/Nervous (CD - 4)

5 Lisa/Farewell/Take Off/Another Meeting (CD - 5)

6 Tavern (CD - 24)

7 Fighting Girls (CD - 6)

8 Stayin' Alive (DVD Rip)

9 Love Theme from Airplane! (CD - 7)

10 From Here to There (CD - 8)

11 Head/Memory (CD - 9)

12 Everything's Coming Up Roses (DVD Rip)

13 River of Jordan (DVD Rip)

14 Shimmer/Molumbo (CD - 10)

15 Zip/Eggs/Roger, Take Over (CD - 11)

16 Wild Violins/Sickness/Idea (CD - 12)

18 "Where the Hell is Kramer?"/Trouble (CD - 14)

19 Mayday (CD - 15)

20 Punch-Up/Kramer (CD - 16)

21 Clumsy (CD - 17)

22 Dog Fight/Failure/Pep Talk/Notre Dame Victory March/Master (CD - 18)

23 Instruments (CD - 26)

Since you mentioned Angels & Demons, anyone have the correct sequencing for The Da Vinci Code, including track times?

I asked this a while back and this excellent reply (http://jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5544&st=280&p=279343entry279343) is what I received at the time.

Does anyone have an order for Brian Tyler's "Rambo"? I gave it a try based on track titles and my recollection of the film:

1. Rambo Main Title

3. Conscription

4. The Rescue

7. Hunting Mercenaries

10. Rambo Returns

18. Battle Adagio

5. Aftermath

19. Rambo End Title

20. Rambo Theme

Thanks!

For the most part it is. Looking at the back of the jewel case along with my vague recollections of the film...

"Cat Suite" is extrapolated from various moments throughout the score, and "The Rise and Fall from Grace" is after "Wild Ride", I believe.

Here is the First Blood cue breakdown, thanks to Charlie Brigden

As the title says. I wanted to put the CD in chronological order, but the score is all over the place on the OST, so I thought I'd take a closer look at what has to be one of Goldsmith's landmark scores, but never really seems to get mentioned much, despite the fact that a lot of it lays the groundwork for some of his most celebrated scores. The times in the film are approximate, as I did it from watching the film on YouTube and I'm not 100% the timing is the same. Still, enjoy!

FIRST BLOOD - Jerry Goldsmith

1. Home Coming (2:28) 0:00 – 2:28

2. Welcome To Hope (1:03) 3:46 – 4:49

3. The Defiant One (0:40) 7:51 – 8:31

4. The Razor (2:18) 14:28 – 16:46

5. Motorcycle Chase (0:20) 16:52 – 17:12

6. Survival Instinct (0:58) 20:17 – 21:15

7. Higher Ground (0:30) 21:50 – 22:20

8. The Cliff (0:56) 24:47 – 25:43

9. The Dive (1:21) 26:53 – 28:14

10. Galt Is Dead (0:34) 28:26 – 29:00

11. Patching Up (0:54) 29:29 – 30:23

12. Guerrilla Warfare (3:47) 35:41 – 39:28

13. A War You Won’t Believe (0:57) 39:31 – 40:28

14. The Cave (0:36) 46:35 - 47:11

The opening credits run over John Rambo walking to the home of his friend Delmar Berry, whom he served with in Vietnam.

2. Welcome To Hope (1:03) 3:46 – 4:49 – OST Track 7 0:57 to end

Delmar’s widow tells Rambo her husband died of cancer. He continues his journey into the small town of Hope, which is presided over by Sheriff Will Teasle.

3. The Defiant One (0:40) 7:51 – 8:31 – OST Track 8 0:00 to 0:40

After Teasle gives him a lift to the edge of town and tells him to clean himself up, Rambo defies him by walking back towards Hope, and is consequently arrested by Teasle for vagrancy.

4. The Razor (2:18) 14:28 – 16:46 – OST Track 8 0:41 to end

After being taken to the Police station and subsequently mistreated, Rambo – fuelled by flashbacks of Vietnam – attacks the Police officers and escapes from the station, stealing a motorcycle.

5. Motorcycle Chase (0:20) 16:52 – 17:12 – Tracked from “The Cliff”

Teasle chases Rambo in his squad car.

6. Survival Instinct (0:58) 20:17 – 21:15 – OST Track 3 3:36 to end

With the Police back in force, Rambo furthers his escape by climbing a large hill.

8. The Cliff (0:56) 24:47 – 25:43 – OST Track 5 1:26 to end

Rambo climbs down onto a cliff-edge only to be confronted by a helicopter with a sniper aboard.

9. The Dive (1:21) 26:53 – 28:14 – OST Track 10 0:38 to end

Rambo dives off the cliff, landing in a tree. He throws a rock at the chopper, causing the sniper to fall to his death.

10. Galt Is Dead (0:34) 28:26 – 29:00 – First and last portions tracked from “Survival Instinct”, middle ‘flashback’ portion tracked from “The Razor”

Rambo takes the coat and gun of the dead sniper.

11. Patching Up (0:54) 29:29 – 30:23 – OST T9 1:54 to end

Rambo sews up a wound on his arm before asking for an amnesty from the Police, which is promptly turned down when they shoot at him.

12. Guerrilla Warfare (3:47) 35:41 – 39:28 – OST Track 6 1:10 to 5:19

In the midst of a storm Rambo stalks the cops, taking them out one by one as they hunt him.

13. A War You Won’t Believe (0:57) 39:31 – 40:28 – OST Track 6 5:20 to end

Rambo threatens Teasle, telling him he should end this now or he’ll give him ‘a war you won’t believe’.

14. The Cave (0:36) 46:35 - 47:11 – OST Track 4 3:25 to end

Rambo sits in a cave, listening to the Police radio.

15. Group Leader To Raven (0:56) 47: 19 to 48:14 – OST Track 7 0:00 to 0:56

Rambo’s mentor Colonel Trautman addresses his team on the radio as he attempts to contact Rambo.

16. First Blood (2:46) 48:15 – 51:01 – OST Track 3 0:00 to 1:58

Rambo refuses to give himself up, as the Police “drew first blood”.

17. Mountain Hunt (2:06) 51:40 – 53:46 – OST Track 3 1:58 to 3:35

The local army goes after Rambo, and believe they’ve killed him after firing a rocket launcher into the cave entrance. The film version is longer than the OST, namely because the opening salvo of percussion is repeated several times.

18. The Tunnel, Part I (3:13) 59:54 – 63:07 – OST Track 4 0:00 to 3:26

Rambo wades through a rat-infested tunnel looking for a way out.

19. The Tunnel, Part II (2:30) 65:10 – 67:40 – OST Track 2

Teasle tells Trautman that he alone will be the one to capture Rambo.

22. Cat and Mouse (0:54) 75:18 – 76:12 – OST Track 9 0:00 to 0:57

Rambo stalks Teasle, cutting the town’s power and attacking the Police station.

23. Gun Shop (1:48) 76:34 – 78:22 – OST Track 5 0:00 to 1:25/Unreleased

Rambo sets off a pile of explosives and shells after finding the town’s gun shop. The end of the cue is unreleased.

24. Rambo Gives Up (0:36) 85:23 – 85:59 – Track 10 0:00 to 0:38

After breaking down in front of Trautman, Rambo gives himself up and is led away by the Colonel.

25. It’s A Long Road (3:20) 86:00 – 89:20 – OST Track 12

Dan Hill’s vocals run over the film’s end credits.

The OST also contains ‘It’s A Long Road (Instrumental)’, however this is incorrectly titled as it is quite different to the vocal track’s music. I’ve put it at the end of the CD and renamed it ‘Theme From “First Blood”’, which serves as a nice bookend as it shares material with ‘Home Coming’.

15 An Ocean of Memories 7.58

16 Hymn to the Sea 6.25

I wanted it to be on one CD and a good listening experience, so not all of the 'extras' from Back to Titanic are included.

See also here and here.

This score is next on my list to edit as I want to edit together a short section of A Building Panic into The Sinking thereby joining that and Death of Titanic together making one extended track as well as making a film version of the ending.

This isn't a request for chronology per se, but I'm wondering if anyone knows the track titles for this Goldsmith concert. It was recorded I think in 2001 with the LSO, and has 23 tracks over two discs, beginning with Star Trek V. Each piece is followed by a track of Goldsmith talking to the audience (he says it's ok to cough and that Rambo paid for his house). I can identify some of the tracks, but I think there's possibly a TV medley and other things that I'm not sure about. Anyone know of this, and have any idea? Thanks.

Speaking of Titanic, was the film version of Leaving Port ever released? Towards the end of [what I call] the Ship theme, with the better sweeping strings arrangement and extra percussion, as the boat sets out to sea.

Why would you chop the music up like it's in the film? It flows much better if you don't mess around with tracked music...

Actually I think it flows surprisingly well and even with my edits it's still not a "hack" job. I thoroughly enjoy the tracks by themselves on the cd but I also enjoy listening to the music with my edits just as much.

Goldsmith gave two concerts with the LSO in 2000 at the Barbican and there was also one in 2001 at the Royal Albert Hall. I went to them all and still have the programmes so can probably help if you can help identify which one it was. In 2000 the second concert was of mostly sci-fi stuff and started with various selections from the Star Trek movies; could it have been that one? What are some of the other scores featured?

It only has one Trek, it opens with the end credits from STAR TREK V. It has RAMBO, HOOSIERS/BEST SHOT, TWILIGHT ZONE, ALIEN, a medley of his TV themes including The Waltons, and it ended with 'The Generals' suite with material from PATTON and MCCARTHUR. I think maybe it's 2001 but I'm not sure.

Could it be a mixture of different concerts? The concert in 2001 started with Star Trek: First Contact and ended with a suite from Rudy. It included the medley of television themes. Goldsmith conducted Alien and Twilight Zone: The Movie in the second of the concerts at the Barbican the previous year. He also did a couple of concerts with the LSO in 2003 but I don't recall him doing Rambo.

I'm not helping much, am I?

You're helping plenty

I'm not sure if it is a mixture, as the comments he gives all seem to come from the same concert, and he speaks about some of the pieces that precede/succeed them, such as ALIEN and Rambo.

Edit: My memory serves me well, it also features the prologue from THE AGONY AND THE ECTASY, which if I remember correctly was being premiered as a concert piece. Although I could be getting mixed up, but it's definitely in there.

Okay. I've finally got Titanic how I want it.

1. Prologue 1:15 (edited from A Life so Changed)

2. Distant Memories 2:23

3. Southampton 4:01

4. Leaving Port 3:26

5. Take Her to Sea, Mr Murdoch 4:31

6. An Irish Party In Third Class 3:49

7. Rose 2:52

8. The Portrait 4:43

9. Hard to Starboard 6:52

10. Alexanders Ragtime Band 2:30

11. A Building Panic 3:04 (shortened)

12. Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave 3:56

13. Nearer My God To Thee 2:49

14. The Sinking, Astor's Death, Death of Titanic 13:42 (includes insert from A Building Panic)

15. A Promise Kept (film version) 5:47 (edited to include A Life So Changed from (approximately) 0:00 to 1:05)

16. Waiting for Absolution 1:10 (edited from A Life so Changed)

17. A Life So Changed and Back To Titanic (edited from A Life So Changed/Rose and Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave)

18. My Heart Will Go On

I just had to include Astor's Death into The Sinking and Death of Titanic because it is a key moment in the film as well as the score and it also allows for the merging of the two previously seperate tracks into one elongated track. I have also pretty much discarded any attempt at trying to edit the End Titles and may just go for a straight DVD rip.

The hardest thing was to try and get a good transition between the tracks for Track 17 - Back To Titanic. The transition from A Life So Changed to Rose is only tempered by the fact that the album version of Rose has an alternate intro to what is heard in the film. The transition from Rose to Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave tested my patience more than once. In the end I got a meagre, although acceptable, version of the last track heard in the film and until the is released as heard in the film this will have to do (unless I can do a better DVD rip).
