Alejandro 28
I might be crazy, but I thought there used to be a Where Dreams Are From version with just orchestra and no vocal out there. I remember a cello instead of a vocal. I swear I used to play it nonstop on a CD I made, but going through the LLL release A.I. can’t find a version of it. And my iTunes for my AI is missing cues so who knows if I have lost it, it never existed, or it’s embedded somewhere in the LLL. Anyone remember such a version? Luke Skywalker 1,939
I think it is a rendition of the theme in the score. Maybe in the last act?
Incanus 5,816
Perhaps the Stored Memories track on the LLL set? It contains a piano and solo cello rendition of Monica's theme but that is relatively brief. But other than that I don't know of any full length cello version of Monica's theme without the vocals. Also could you be mixing Monica's theme up with the Blue Fairy theme as there is a longer rendition of the Blue Fairy theme on solo cello in The Specialist Visits. The Biker Hounds (Extension) would go in the middle of The Moon Rising/The Biker Hounds but that would require some editing. You could add the Abandoned in the Woods (album version) in the C&C list after Where Dreams Are Born since it was intended at some point as the second half of the end credits but ultimately wasn't used and they tracked in choral music from Journey Through the Ice instead. And so was the cute talking teddy bear sidekick. The version Spielberg made followed religiously the extended outline as prepared by Kubrick. But then, that means nothing. On most of his films Kubrick would go through hundreds of versions. Man was like a computer exploring every imaginable option. There were some really bad ideas in some of the early versions of his other films. It's hard to say what his version A.I. would have been like. His projects were always in constant flux. Popular Post crumbs 14,884
I don't know how anyone could possibly interpret the ending of A.I. as being sugary sweet and saccharine, let alone "happy." It could well be the most disturbed, dark and haunting ending to any Spielberg film. Don't be fooled by what appears on the surface; there's a very tragic undercurrent of artificiality to both Kaminski's superb photography and Williams' brilliant score. Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,260
I would never describe this ending as happy but I don't subscribe to the idea that it's somehow really disturbing and dark and twisted either. John Dutton 7,394
The idea is that an infantile robot that didn't understand human culture or emotions and was disturbingly obsessed with changing itself and gaining a woman's affection was the closest link to humanity. It's realistic and relatable. mstrox

It is what is shown - bittersweet. The ending is deeply disturbing to me, though I accept that endings like this will yield different reactions depending on the viewer. David was designed to unconditionally love a mother. He was created to fulfill Monica's needs as a mother while her biological son could not. At the end, once all that remains are the descendants of humanity's artificial creations, a fake Monica is created to fulfill David's need to be someone's child. An idealised version of the real Monica is created to unconditionally love David. We see David make her coffee, watch them play hide and seek, see David tuck Monica into bed. All these events are repeated from Act I except the roles are reversed. Now it is David whose needs are being fulfilled, the artificial being now playing the role of a human once all humanity is gone. This is Spielberg & Kubrick's bleakest, most challenging ending because it shows how self-delusion can result in wish fulfillment. The cloned Monica is nothing like the one from David's past but he cares not. He believes the fantasy; he's reunited with his "mother", he believes his wish has come true. Yet the fairy-tale ending is as artificial as David himself. John, Jay, Holko and 4 others
