Josh500 1,620 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 At 3:25-3:30, 4:11-4:18............. Is this a clarinet? Why does it sound so different from the other clarinet solos (Viktor navorski's theme, for example)? At 3:34-3:37, 4:00-4:05 ............. and which instrument is this? Is this a synthethizer?Schindler's Workforce is, IMHO, one of the very best JW compositions...THANKS!!!!
Trumpeteer 304 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I asked the same question about 10 years ago.I don't remember getting an answer.
BLUMENKOHL 1,090 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 At 3:25-3:30, 4:11-4:18That's a clarinet. 3:34-3:37, 4:00-4:05That\'s a Honeygoose. They\'re actually really difficult to play because the way the instrument is designed, there\'s a great deal of sharp edges to it. It\'s not uncommon to see honeygoose players with bandaids on.
Joe Brausam 231 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 At 3:25-3:30, 4:11-4:18............. Is this a clarinet? ------ Yes it's a clarinet (though it could be one of its variations) with a more throaty and hollow tone, it is just a style difference. At 3:34-3:37, 4:00-4:05 ............. and which instrument is this? ------ A dulcimer I believe, the first time doubled by bassoon. The second time it was hard for me to tell if it was doubled, but if it were I think it was by an English Horn.3:34-3:37, 4:00-4:05That's a Honeygoose. Henry B 51 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 At 3:25-3:30, 4:11-4:18............. Is this a clarinet? Is this a synthethizer?I believe it's a cymbalon.
Joe Brausam 231 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Cymbalom - that's the word I was looking for. It's a Hungarian instrument, I believe. I'm sticking to my doublings though, especially the bassoon!m sticAre we sure that's a flute though? It sounds a bit reedy but I guess it does sound like a bass flute.
Henry B 51 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Actually, no, it is a clarinet. I'm trying to follow along with the written score, but because this cue was revised so many times the album track doesn't match up with it at all. For what it's worth, the score indicates, among other curiosities, two synth keyboards.
BLUMENKOHL 1,090 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 The second one is very definitely a Honeygoose. I know one when I hear it.

I don't want to check the score right now.
Joe Brausam 231 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I'm actually too lazy to pull out my external HD to check the score too..
Henry B 51 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 The score specifies a cymbalom, not a setar (sitar?).
Josh500 1,620 Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 Thanks guys! Cymbalon or sitar or honeygoose... didn't know that!I'm still wondering, though, why the clarinet sounds so different here... it MUST be some kind of specific clarinet. At 3:25-3:30, 4:11-4:18............. Is this a clarinet? Why does it sound so different from the other clarinet solos (Viktor navorski's theme, for example)? It's a flute. Henry B 51 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I've conferred with Blumenkohl, he has proven to me that the instrument in question is in fact a honeygoose. Show's over, folks. You can go home now.
Joe Brausam 231 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I'd never heard of one.The clarinet I think just has more to do with the tone color that the player is producing though - timbre can be very variable if need be.
Nick Parker 3,049 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Mmmm, that looks tasty (if a bit dry). And I searched for a "Honeygoose" on Google.com, and I only find Asian recipes....
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Me too. I ended up hungry instead of informed...
Josh500 1,620 Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Me too. I ended up hungry instead of informed...They're messing with us... It's a cymbalon!
