The Official Varese Sarabande Thread

I know a few people suggested an official Varese thread along the lines of FSM and Intrada, so I thought I'd make one, especially as there are two new releases on the site, including a new Desplat.

THE CRAZIES
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by Mark Isham

Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy...until suddenly it isn't. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the “American Dream” gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies, a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Pulse, Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house … after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutten tries to make sense of what's happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh … with insanity.

Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent. In an effort to keep the madness contained, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won't let anyone in or out -- even those uninfected. The few still sane find themselves trapped: Sheriff Dutten; his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutten's deputy and right-hand man. Forced to band together, an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for survival as they do their best to get out of town alive.

Mark Isham, who amplified the terror in The Mist, provides the chilling score.

Overture Films opens The Crazies on February 26.

THE GHOSTWRITER
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by Alexandre Desplat

Ewan McGregor
Pierce Brosnan
Kim Catrall
Olivia Williams

The New Film From Roman Polanski

THE GHOSTWRITER tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghost writer is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang’s wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations. The cast also includes Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and Tom Wilkinson. THE GHOSTWRITER is based on the novel The Ghost written by best-selling author Robert Harris. It won the International Thriller Writers’ Award for best novel of 2008. Harris joined director Roman Polanski in adapting the book for the big screen.

Academy Award nominee Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) has created a suspenseful and captivating work, which recalls the classic thriller scores of the legendary Bernard Herrmann.

Summit Entertainment opens THE GHOSTWRITER nationwide on February 19.

THE WOLFMAN

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by Danny Elfman

Benicio Del Toro

Anthony Hopkins

Emily Blunt

Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother…and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate. As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself…one he never imagined existed.

The classically Gothic, Transylvania-flavored score is by Danny Elfman.

GREEN ZONE

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by John Powell

Matt Damon

Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) re-team for their latest electrifying thriller in Green Zone, a film set in the chaotic early days of the Iraqi War when no one could be trusted and every decision could detonate unforeseen consequences. During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one booby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their mission. Spun by operatives with intersecting agendas, Miller must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil for answers that will either clear a rogue regime or escalate a war in an unstable region. And at this blistering time and in this combustible place, he will find the most elusive weapon of all is the truth.

Another veteran of the Bourne team is composer John Powell, who contributes an adrenaline-pumping score.

Universal Pictures opens GREEN ZONE nationwide on March 12.

Thread's here: http://jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18507

It was a clip of Isham recording a tribute piece to the love theme last week, and not only did he say "Varese is releasing the score..." but at the end there's a screen that says "coming soon from Varese Sarabande".

His biggest mistake was tweeting it, and it was taken down about 10 mins after that.

Isham's words, as I typed out from the video (not all the words, just a part of them):

"... so Varese is releasing the score ... re-releasing it, and they're doing a special CD where they've asked several artists to come in and do the theme, so there will be a CD of like ten different people doing the same piece of music; it's going all the way from us to Alexandre Desplat..."

And briefly mentioned after that one was a chamber orchestra, too.

BROOKLYN'S FINEST

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by Marcelo Zarvos

Richard Gere

Wesley Snipes

Ethan Hawke

Don Cheadle

In the course of one chaotic week, the lives of three conflicted New York City police officers are dramatically transformed by their involvement in a massive drug operation in Brooklyn's Finest, a searing new crime drama from acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day).

Burned out veteran Eddie Dugan (Golden Globe-winner Richard Gere) is just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke) has discovered there's no line he won't cross to provide a better life for his long-suffering wife and seven children. And Clarence "Tango" Butler (Oscar nominee Don Cheadle) has been undercover so long his loyalties have started to shift from his fellow police officers to his prison buddy Caz (Wesley Snipes), one of Brooklyn's most infamous drug dealers.

With personal and work pressures bearing down on them, each man faces daily tests of judgment and honor in one of the world's most difficult jobs. When NYPD's Operation Clean Up targets the notoriously drug-ridden BK housing project, all three officers find themselves swept away by the violence and corruption of Brooklyn's gritty 65th Precinct and its most treacherous criminals. During seven fateful days, Eddie, Sal and Tango find themselves hurtling inextricably toward the same fatal crime scene and a shattering collision with destiny.

Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd, Taking Chance) provides the powerful and dramatic score.

Overture Films opens Brooklyn’s Finest nationwide on March 5.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by John Powell

From the studio that brought you Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda comes the 3D adventure, How to Train Your Dragon. Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Animation veteran John Powell (Shrek, Happy Feet, Kung Fu Panda) provides the spectacularly epic score for choir and orchestra.

DreamWorks Animation opens How To Train Your Dragon nationwide on March 26.

FRINGE

Original Television Soundtrack

Music Composed by Michael Giacchino • Chris Tilton • Chad Seiter

From J.J. Abrams (Lost), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman — the team that brought you Star Trek, Mission Impossible: III and Alias — and executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Bryan Burk comes a new drama that thrills, terrifies and explores the blurring line between science fiction and reality.

When an international flight lands at Boston’s Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham is called in to investigate. When the search nearly kills her partner, Special Agent John Scott, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to Dr. Walter Bishop, our generation’s Einstein. There’s only one catch: He’s been institutionalized for the last 20 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son, Peter, in to help. Under Special Agent Phillip Broyles, our trio will discover that what happened on that fatal flight is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.

Academy Award nominee and Grammy and Golden Globe winner Michael Giacchino again returns to the J.J. Abrams universe to head the composing team for the new hit series from Fox.

The Season 1 DVD for FRINGE is available now, and Season 2 is currently running on Fox.

Dracula Deluxe Edition (à là The Fury) would be awesome as well.

I second that! With hugely improved sound thank you!

I'm thinking Spartacus may not be in this batch, especially if Mark Isham's video was done in January. I don't know if they would have enough time to get it ready that quickly.

I'm sure whatever Varese releases will be worthy. There's always something from their club releases I want.

I would suggest that perhaps Family Plot might be coming but Varese keeps things under wraps so the little slip from SAE could mean that FSM is going to release it.

I don't get too hyped up over Varese club CD's any more. The club CD's I have from them are Home Alone 2, Project X, Short Circuit, Iron Eagle, Matilda, Predator and The Matrix: Deluxe Edition.

The Varese CD club has released many outstanding / desired scores. They are on par with LaLaLand, FSM, Intrada and Prometheus as far as delivering great/good scores from years past.

Can't argue with that. But a lot of their recent releases have tended to be as far back as the 50s and they rarely seem to go contemporary (90s onwards). That's where my interest never builds up.

Although the lack of clues does help in that it means they could be absolutely anything.

Varese doesn't give clues.

And truthfully you might as well sit back because the 90's are probably going to be further down the line, with the exception of some scores. Forone the re-use fees are going to be too high right now.

They release as much or more modern music than the other labels (The Matrix etc.). I still don't get the absolute flat out refusal to ever give pre-80s music a try.
