Omen II 1,301 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 The schedule for the 2010 season of the popular BBC Proms concert series at the Royal Albert Hall in London was announced today. Among the surprises are John Williams's music from Hook in prom number 60 (see here) and Hans Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean in none other than the Last Night! I've not had time to look through everything in detail, but there are some other great looking concerts that caught my eye, including the great John Wilson and his orchestra back after last year's triumph and the lovely Hilary Hahn playing Beethoven's violin concerto in an all-Beethoven concert with the first and fifth symphonies.Click here for full listings.Damien
Jay 46,252 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Nice. I saw John Williams perform Flight To Neverland live last May with the Boston Pops. It was magnificent
Richard P 5,306 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Pirates in the Prom? Wow. Just wow. I'll have to wait until it's eventually shown on TV though, as I'll be in New York on 30th August. Also a Doctor Who prom on 25th July. That'll be awesome.
Maglorfin 219 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Man, one day, I must move to London! Well, what a happy coincidence it is that I'm actually typing this post from a London hotel room but I'll only be living here for a few days, however it will be long enough to catch the LSO concert. Omen II, are you by any chance coming too (on Sunday at 19.30 at the Barbican)? Would be happy to meet you in person!
John Crichton 4 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Also a Doctor Who prom on 25th July. That'll be awesome.Another Doctor Who Prom??????? Oh yes....Two actually, the 24th and 25th, proms #s 10 and 11.Hook too, huh? Sweet.

I'm not going to this one I'm afraid, Maglorfin, but thanks for the kind sentiment nonetheless (usually when people say they'd like to meet me, it's quickly followed up by some threat of violence!). If you're over again for a concert in London that we're both at, I would be happy to meet up for a post-concert beer or three. The last LSO concert I went to was back in February, with Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Midori playing Mendelssohn's violin concerto under Sir Colin Davis (oo-er). By the way, I read that Andre Previn is unwell and will no longer conduct the concert on Sunday?
Maglorfin 219 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 By the way, I read that Andre Previn is unwell and will no longer conduct the concert on Sunday?Yes, unfortunately it's true, and I was sooo looking forward to finally seeing Previn conduct live and to hear the magnificent Alpine Symphony played by the LSO! Now Xavier-Roth will replace him at short notice and conduct Dvořák's 9th instead.Oh alrighty then, hope to meet you some other time!
Maxxie 1 Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Meh, it's only the Tortuga Hornpipe track from Dead Man's Chest that's being performed, so I'm not that bothered. I'm Still shocked that something like this is in there at all though!
Docteur Qui 1,581 Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Looking forward to seeing what will be played at the Doctor Who concert. Hopefully it'll include mostly new stuff. I love the new action theme, and Amy's theme music from the first episode was gorgeous. Not to mention the heart-breaking and epic underscore for the Tenth Doctor's final moments.
Jacck 23 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Great! I'll definitely be getting tickets for prom 60. Bernstein and Williams, great. Can't sniff at Gershwin and Arnold's Cornish Dances, either...Prom 71 will definitely be another one to get tickets for as well. Stravinsky's rite and Debussy.. right up my alley. :-)
Omen II 1,301 Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Great! I'll definitely be getting tickets for prom 60. Bernstein and Williams, great. Can't sniff at Gershwin and Arnold's Cornish Dances, either...It's amazing just how quickly some of these concerts sell out! Although I was not particularly interested in it, the Doctor Who concert had already sold out by the time I got back from work on Tuesday (the first day tickets were on sale). I was lucky enough to bag tickets the same day for the Beethoven / Hilary Hahn prom although it was only rear circle tickets left by the time I logged in that evening. I was also thinking of going to the John Wilson Rodgers & Hammerstein concert, but that is already sold out as well! At least with the Proms, if it is something you really have to go to you can always take your chance and queue up in the hope of getting one of the standing tickets if you get there early enough.
Omen II 1,301 Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 There is an interesting discussion brewing here on the BBC Radio 3 / Proms messageboard. One of the posters has started a thread suggesting that John Williams be invited to conduct a Proms concert of his music in his 80th birthday year, 2012.As expected, there are plenty of posts from those delighting in listing works that Williams has allegedly 'ripped off', although there are also plenty of posters opining in support of the idea. I'm not getting involved, but if anyone here is feeling brave enough to join in, fill your boots (but make sure that you don your tin helmet and your thickest skin first!).It's good to see scores such as Dracula, Earthquake and The Eiger Sanction mentioned in despatches by the pro-Williams rebels!

davros72 1 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Is this broadcast on BBC?I believe it was originally on BBC Radio 3 (don't know if it's still up on iPlayer), but was also filmed for a theoretical (but unscheduled so far) television edition, possibly in August. Maybe. I'd love to see the whole thing, but I know it'll be edited down. I'd most like to see the "This is Gallifrey..." section with the regenerations up on the screen, curious to match the audience reactions to the regenerations...
Omen II 1,301 Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 When they had the first Dr. Who prom a couple of years ago, it was screened on TV around Christmas time, if I remember rightly. There are a few photos of this year's Dr. Who prom on the Proms website here if anyone is interested.I was there last Tuesday for another of the concerts and there was still an inflatable dalek floating in the pool in the middle of the hall.
Omen II 1,301 Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 It's nearly time for John Williams's Hook, for those interested - you can listen live here (click on the listen live bit).
Maurizio 6,914 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Thanks for pointing it out! I've listened to the concert and it was really fun.
Omen II 1,301 Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 No probs, Maurizio. I was intending to go to this one but, by the time I had dithered and dallied, all the seated tickets had sold out and I couldn't be bothered joining the queue for the standing places. I wonder if Jack Chapple went to it and can give a report?Although I have only attended one of this season's Proms concerts so far (an all-Beethoven Prom with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and violinist Hilary Hahn, which was simply outstanding), I have enjoyed watching several others on TV.

Details are here. As the programme is only one hour long, it will inevitably have been edited down slightly.

Sorry, not much help, but read it out there in the net somewhere.
