Hi,

Since I'm in New York next month I'm going to see John Williams conduct at the 'Tanglewood On Parade' concert on August 3.

I was wondering: is anyone else going?

I would love to do both but with it being a 10 hour drive I opted for the Film Night on the 14th

Either way should be good and I can't wait especially since this is my first live concert! (with JW anyway!)

I'm going. Should be even BETTER than the film-night concerts since the whole show is a tribute to him (well except Tchaikovsky 1812 for the finale).

So did anyone actually attend this? I'm surprised we haven't heard any reports from the concert yet. All I know is that the BSO website listed the program as follows:

WILLIAMS

'Superman' March

WILLIAMS

Suite from 'JFK'

WILLIAMS

Three songs from 'Seven for Luck'

WILLIAMS

Music from 'Harry Potter'

WILLIAMS

'For New York'

WILLIAMS

Music from 'Memoirs of a Geisha'

TCHAIKOVSKY

1812 Overture

There will also be a surprise item, to be announced from the stage!

***

Sounds like it would have been a great concert, with a rare performance of Seven For Luck. I wonder what the "surprise" was...

Testimonies, please!!!

The surprises were Ma as soloist on Memoirs of a Geisha, a tribute by James Taylor and Ma, playing a Taylor composed song, and the Hymn to New England conducted by Lockhart with a projection of images from Williams relation with the BSO.

Lockhart conducted the Boston Pops on Superman and JFK suite, Asbury the TMC Orchestra on the Three Songs from Seven for Luck (with Elizabeth Baldwin, a TMC fellow) and three pieces from Harry Potter, Julian Kuerti (BSO assistant conductor) conducted the Boston Symphony on For New York, and Williams with the BSO and Ma did the three pieces from Memoirs. Follwing that was the tribute by Taylor and Ma and Lockhart conducting the BSO on Hymn. Williams returned to the podium to conducted the joint forces of the BSO and TMC orchestra on the 1812 overture.

Hey I was there too! I'm still in Washington, but as soon as I'm back in Holland I will post a report on the concert.

Personal highlight for me was shaking John's hand, getting his autograph and a photo with him during intermission.

Before the intermission, John was in the audience pretty close to where I was seated. So as soon as the intermission started I went to him and got to talk to him for a minute or so. One of the greatest moments of my life.

Awesome. I'll be on the lawn at film night so I'll doubt I'll get near him.

There is a chance. During the last piece, head to the left side of the stage (this will be the right side if you're looking at the stage from the audience's perspective). On that side there is a stage exit which John Williams will use after the show. The people working at Tanglewood are more than willing to show you this place if you ask before the show. When Williams is not too tired, he sometimes will do autograph signings after the show on this spot. Perhaps it's your lucky day. :)

I'm getting there as early as I can.

Also, before the concert, you can go to the stage and on the left side (right side from your perspective) you can see John's personal room (his name is on the door). :)

Some notes on the concert:

Although the moment as seen in the pictures above made me a bit less attentive to the performances, I must say that I loved the JFK suite. The theme (a rearrangement of the Prologue) and the Motorcade were stunning, but the performance of Arlington was superb. I found a new appreciation for that piece and my wife (who never heard it before) was almost in tears. Such a beautiful and profound composition.

I also found a new appreciation for his Seven Of Luck cycle. Though only three songs from it were performed, I was especially moved by the third song and the performance. I don't really like the Chocolate song, but it got some laughs from the audience and I understand better now that that is the purpose of the lyrics and the composition.

The Harry Potter suite was great, Hedwig's Theme in particular.

After the intermission, one particular piece stood out for me: the fantastic rearrangement of Brush On Silk from the Memoirs Of A Geisha soundtrack. Williams really made that piece something thrilling and grand and I wish this arrangement was presented on the OST.

I didn't care too much for the 1812 Overture, but observing Williams was fun. He really gave his all and clearly enjoyed conducting this piece.

I'd kill to go to this, living in Belgium atm and typically we've already booked our honeymoon next month in Italy, should've made it this month in NY or Boston so we could see this!!! lol Don't know how we'd get easy travel to Tanglewood though.

Roald,

The Brush on Silk arrangement can be found in the Music of America collection in the Memoirs suite, as can the other two pieces performed at the concert. I was not at this concert, but I did attend film night 4 years ago for the debut of the cello suite. I thought then, as I do today, that this suite is one of the best extended cello pieces ever composed.

Thanks for the tip, Tom!

The Music Of America CD was on my wishlist, but it just moved to the top spot! :)
