Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Hello there. I'm just on the verge of getting Ben Hur. The new sony re-releases in Europe. In amazon there are two listed, one with the jewel case cover for 9.99 GP and one with the deluxe big-not-fitting-on-my-shelf box for 12.99 GP.I know there was a one CD version in jewel case, but both are listed as having 2 cds. (the big box version having the tracklist)In amazon.de, both items have the 2cd tracklist but the jewel case in 1€ more expensive (?)In amazon.fr only the jewel case is listed, also with 2 cds.In two spanish stores, jewel case cover, 2cds.So do you think its the same product, with different prices by human error, or are there two versions of it? One would think that they would not remake the expensive big box, but the amazon photo has the sony logo on it, so it's a reprint.Does the big box have a 2cd jewel case inside? (i could swear i saw the inside once and was more like digipack)Will the jewel case have the same liner notes in a small booklet?I dont want a package that i'm not going to put on shelves and have to make my custom covers....Anyone has bought/seen this?
Marian Schedenig 11,698 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 At least judging from the photos at amazon.de, the book version seems to be identical to the old Rhino release, except for the Sony logo as you said - if that's any help.
Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 25, 2010 Author Posted July 25, 2010 Will the book fit a jewel case format (these re-issues are told to have extensive liner notes on the press release), or is is too extensive and will be abridged? Are there any other goodies that the jewel case could not have due to lack of space?
Ollie 1,375 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Other than liner notes and two CDs there is nothing special about the Ben Hur box CD. I'm sure they could shrink the notes to fit the jewel case.Be warned that there is a general assumption among fans that FSM may be preparing a complete, comprehensive version of Ben Hur.
crocodile 9,725 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Honestly, I would like to have a Tadlow El Cid-like re-recording.Karol
Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 25, 2010 Author Posted July 25, 2010 Be warned that there is a general assumption among fans that FSM may be preparing a complete, comprehensive version of Ben Hur.uh... what is missing from this set (from the actual film score)? This set is in undamaged stereo? Will the fsm release cost around 15 €?
Ollie 1,375 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Well the 2 disc set will be the cheapest option, plus you have more than enough music. But according to golden age film score fans and those in the business there is more music to be had, you could get a 3rd disc and 4th one as well if alternates and album cues from the various recordings done by Rozsa are added.Plus I'm sure some improvements on the sound could be made. Plus it was left off the Rozsa box set from FSM, which is why quite a few people over at FSM are speculating it's coming.
The Dark Trilogy 40 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I have the Sony 2CD set. The big box Sony 2CD set is the same as the Rhino. The other one (the version I have) is in normal 2CD case. Booklet is the same as the Rhino, but it starts with the track-by-track analysis, not the history of the set production, etc. as the Rhino and the new Sony box has. Pictures of the booklet and cover design are the same, as same as the sound quality.Hope this helps.

The Dark Trilogy 40 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 No, you missunderstood. There is no production notes on the Sony 2CD set, only the track-by-track analysis. The other issues on the big Rhino booklet were left out to fit it in the 2CD case.
Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 OK, thanks. I finally ordered the jewel case.An amazon dealer had it for 5GP, which is almost free...Im not paying thrice for some producction notes... Specially if a new version is coming...
The Dark Trilogy 40 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 That is a reason, why I bought this 2CD. I do not like the big longbox; I like CD's with normal case. The longbox is asymmetric to my other CD's and it doesn't fit in the shelf, where the other CD's are.So you would not regret it!
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I bought the long Rhino box set about six years ago and never regretted it.If/when I ever properly decide to place it on a shelf of its own, instead of just on top of some books or stashed in the corner, it will look fine beside my Gettysburg long box, Star Wars Anthology long box, Billy Joel long box, Genesis Archives long box, and Bruce Springsteen Tracks long box.
Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 Size matters not. If i had several boxes of this, i would have ordered that since it looks more 'deluxe'.Or if it had been the only option.
Ollie 1,375 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 The Rhino box fits fine on my shelf. I just lay it on its side on top of my FSM box sets.
Luke Skywalker 2,386 Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 BTW wojo just seeing you new avatar, at ubeda taldow played a clip of the main title re-recording of lawrence. It sounded really good.
Marian Schedenig 11,698 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 It's also an interesting cover, one I've never seen before. SoundtrackCollector doesn't know it either. Where's it from?
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 http://tadlowmusic.com/arabia.htmI haven't seen fit to make a thread for Tadlow's world premiere recording of the complete score to Lawrence of Arabia. It won't be released until Sep 13.
Joe Brausam 234 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 The Rhino box fits fine on my shelf. I just lay it on its side on top of my FSM box sets.I display mine almost the same way. Long boxes fit, people just need to try!

It won't be released until Sep 13.I don't get it. The second disc looks like its just unrelated stuff by the same composer. Why not release the 2 discs separate? Why force someone who wants to just buy LOR to buy a 2 disc set? And there's a 2 minute alternate on the second disc that could have fit on the first

It's wonderful that they're able to do this. Also, Firefox!

It won't be released until Sep 13.Oh, excellent! I have a copy of the OST somewhere, but I've hardly ever played it. I only really started appreciating this music when I heard it live - somehow, the old CD doesn't seem to do those timpanis justice.

Jay 46,252 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Major releases that would generate multiple pages of discussion (Poseidon Adventure, Independence Day, Batman, Back To The Future) get their own threads. You're always welcome to start a Lawrence of Arabia thread; It's not a big deal
Marian Schedenig 11,698 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 You don't need to make a new thread; we have an " Upcoming Soundtracks" thread:Which I never read, so I wouldn't have noticed a Lawrence announcement there.
Charlie Brigden 7 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Wojo, ruler of Australia, start the thread!
Jay 46,252 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 That thread as well as the Varese, Intrada, FSM, and LLL threads are all worth reading to keep up with whats coming out

The Dark Trilogy 40 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Hm....well good luck. Thank you! I have luck. After buying the 2CD with normal case, it fits in my collection!
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I really hope one of you guys would have created a separate thread eventually. I saw Wojo's avatar and was like, "What's this?! Is a new release coming?" I didn't know where to look on the board and eventually found the talk here. Would have been upset if I missed this release.
Melange 448 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 BECAUSE IT'S CLEAN"I think you are another of these desert-loving JwFan Members: Doughty, Stanhope, Melange of Khartoum"The deluxe big-not-fitting-on-my-shelf box for 12.99 GP.LOL, very true. It can be a bit awkward. But it looks lovely
crocodile 9,725 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I actually purchased the Sony re-issue yesterday. Always wanted to have this.Karol
Ollie 1,375 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Ben Hur is one of the greatest film scores ever. That is all.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 The big box is a beautiful set. For twelve pounds you can't go wrong. I think I paid about 40 pounds for that back in 1996.
Marian Schedenig 11,698 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Ben Hur is one of the greatest film scores ever.Yeah, but it's available in great and normal sized packaging.
TheTennisBallKid 27 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 As wonderful as the Rhino longbox looks (and it has a place of honor on my shelf), I've always thought that the track-by-track liner notes, that recount the story in great detail while only actually mentioning the music a couple of times, were a bit of waste. Not that I'm really complaining, this is one score that definitely speaks for itself quite plainly.Ben Hur is one of the greatest film scores ever.Yes.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Ben Hur is one of the greatest film scores ever.Yes.Indeed.
crocodile 9,725 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I've just found nice and lenghty suite on Youtube: Karol
Jacob 1 Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Ben Hur is one of the greatest film scores ever.Yes.Indeed.I'll add a and a .Now I just need to get myself a copy.
