Yes, seriously.

I was making a playlist consisting of top 5 tracks from various Williams scores, and I came to Jaws. I honestly didn't really have a hard time doing it.

In my opinion it's:

1.) Main Titles/First Victim (for the obvious Jaws theme and from 1:58-2:06 with the theme going into those strings as Chrissie is ripped apart)

2.) Blown to Bits (In my top 5 Williams action cues, that's for sure! (:49-:54) where it's the Jaws theme right into the Orca theme showing there is still hope for Brody) This is also the reason why I prefer the 25th ann. edition of this track to the OST, because that part is missing!

3.) The Shark Cage Fugue (obvious)

4.) Into the Estuary (:21-:30 how the tempo changes when Brody realizes that it's not a hoax and his son is in the pond and then :48-:56 is just a terrific rendition, not to mention that AMAZING scene as the shark dips under water as we see Brody's youngest son playing in the sand)

5.) The Great Shark Chase (1:09-1:20, enough said)

I was like, "alright, nice, lets move on to---holy shit, I forgot "Man Against Beast!" I tried to put it in. I really tried. I love that cue, who doesn't? But I couldn't take out the others. Then I thought about the end titles, same deal.

It's a tough one for a top 5.

Am I insane for leaving out "Man Against Beast"??

No. You're insane for trying to distill every Williams score to just five tracks!

But it's not much different than making a soundtrack sampler playlist of just the best one or two tracks from every film score in your collection, which I started to make myself until I got to D, got bored, and stopped.

It's not like you're cutting the Jaws CD up and deleting all other tracks from your inventory. Are you?

And if you started to listen to an album, changed your mind and switched to something else, and didn't go back to it for a month, it would be the same as listening to an intentionally truncated playlist.

So all is well.

Definitely not deleting anything. Just a themed playlist.

I was just more shocked of it not even registering in my mind when making it. I didn't even think twice about the 5 I chose. Man Against Beast is the staple action cue from that album. Although, I think the last minute and half drags though, but that part is needed in the film, just as a listening experience goes it's kinda just goes on.

But for someone who is skeptical about purchasing Jaws to listen to, I would definitely recommend that cue to get them into it! Which is funny to me.

And yes, a top "insert #" list of anything done by John Williams in insane to do.

That top 20 end credits thread, hahaha, that would take me like 5 years to do.

I started to make a playlist of the main titles, end credits, or otherwise longest or most signature piece from each score, to basically give me guessing game material. I'd put the list on random in my car, and ask my passengers to guess what each piece was from.

Or I'd give them the iPod, and ask them to quiz me on random. Which means I'd get stuck on some 30 second track from an obscure Intrada I listened to once before. Loser.

If you're making a top 5 Jaws cue list, you might want to go with the OST tracks in some cases. Out to Sea being the most obvious, is expanded into a delightful concert arrangement on the album. And jeepers, no End Titles on your list?

Out to Sea, and especially Tourists on the Menu are excellent on the OST, but I still prefer the film versions 99% of the time listening to Jaws. The OST is a nice listen though.

I just couldn't put the End Titles in there :) , they would be in my top 5 end titles list of all time, but not top 5 Jaws cues.

Maybe insane for making 5 cue play lists for all of Williams' scores. :)

But no, because if I picked 5 cues they would be different from what you picked.

Do tell!

1. Jaws Main Title from original LP

2. The Indianapolis Story

3. Promenade (Tourists On The Menu)

4. Sea Attack Number One

5. The Underwater Siege

I'd say:

1. The Great Shark Chase

2. Man Against Beast

3. Blown to Bits

4. Main Titles and the First Victim

5. Shark Cage Fugue

It's funny you put in "The Underwater Siege." I thought about it actually. 1:30-1:34 has to be the most menacing rendition of the theme he has ever written. But what kept it out is that I prefer the strings in "The Shark Approaches."

I'd also say it's safe to say you're in the minority with having "The Indianapolis Story" in your top 5!

No one has mentioned Night Search yet. My personal favourite track from the entire score!

Yeah it is a favourite of mine too. What brilliant atmosphere of mystery and mounting dread it conjures.

It starts out so pretty, almost magical. It really lulls you into a dreamlike state, only to scare the crap out of you!

I could not agree more. I fell in love with the piece the first time I listened to the OST. Prior to that I had only heard the main theme and was expecting the rest of the score to follow suit. Boy was I wrong. Williams really provides a multifaceted and colorful score for the film that is in turn scary, mysterious and adventurous.

It's funny, because I think :53-1:07 and then the motif for them scrambling on the deck is some of the best music in the whole movie, I just couldn't put it in my top 5, though.

It's a magical scene when the shark swims by as Quint corrects Hooper with weight. My goodness.
