The Lynn Harrell benefit album as finally been released and includes a new recording of Williams' Elegy for Cello and Orchestra, with Harrell backed up by the Angeli Ensemble, conducted by Michael Nowak.

The final track is an arrangement of Arlen's immortal "Over the Rainbow", arranged by Randy Kerber for soprano, piano, cello and orchestra, which Williams conducted for the recording.

The CD can be bought from here, though they will only ship within the United States territory. I did ask, and while they were kind to check, the overseas shipping charges are just insane :(

For everyone else interested, the album is available at iTunes.

Lynn Harrell....that's the guy who Williams wrote the Young Person's Guide to the Cello for, right?

Thanks for the heads-up about the recording, Miguel. Hopefully, it will be made available to non-US citizens as well.

It's not like they won't sell it for anyone outside the United States... it's just that the shipping charges are unbelievable high!

I listened to a 1:30 clip on itunes of this Elegy recording, and frankly I don't care for the sound of it. Doesn't sound like it was recorded well, and I the performance seemed flat.

BUMP.

I bought it and listened. It's a miserable performance compared to Yo-Yo Ma's. For example...what should be a gorgeous and mournful cello phrase around a minute into the track is completely bereft of any sense of drama or emotion. Shockingly disappointing out of Lynn Harrell.
