JW Interview on the Baltimore Sun

"There is a considerable amount of material in front of me for the next few years," he said. "There are two or three projects for Steven Spielberg — very exciting things he's doing, some in development now. And a new 'Star Wars' [Episode 7] looms. I'll have to do my sit-ups."

Very cool article and what a generous guy to go around the country donating so much of his time to help financially strapped orchestras! Sadly I'll miss this by a week. BSO is an excellent orchestra full of talent and kind music making spirit.

Some trivia...

Williams conducted the Baltimore Symphony at the Lincoln Memorial, December 31, 1999, when he premiered his "Unfinished Journey" score. He wanted to have the Boston Symphony, but as they were unavailable, the Baltimore Symphony was used under an alias.

Alsop was the first woman to conduct the Boston Pops Orchestra, invited by the then music director, one John Williams dude :P

Alsop is also a violin player, who also worked as a session player in the east coast, having performed on recordings by Carly Simon.

A nice article Maurizio. Thanks for sharing. And interesting info on Alsop and Baltimore Symphony Miguel (our resident JW scholar). :)

So uh.... "several" Spielberg projects? Which ones is referring to? He's not going to score HALO, is he?

Old Steven has something secret up his sleeve eh.

Williams should know all about violence in the film industry, given the brutal smack-down he gave Pat Doyle back in '98!

It's a tough business. Grave illness is no excuse to stop fighting!

Seriously though - what "multiple" projects does Spielberg have?

Gershwin biopic - canceled right?

Harvey remake - canceled right?

Chocky - canceled right?

39 Clues - canceled right?

Pirate Lattitudes - ???

Moses biopic - no news on this in a while now....

Robopocalypse - this should be ONE of the titles in question.... unless it's been quietly canceled too.

Interstellar - Project moved to Nolan/Zimmer

HALO - its a TV series, and Spielberg is only producing, not directing - Williams never scores those

Napoleon - Another TV series (well, miniseries) that Spielberg is only producing, not directing

What else?

Spielberg is no longer attached to Interstellar since DreamWorks parted ways with Paramount (that was one of the many casualty projects of that split).

Harvey was cancelled almost two years ago, as far as I remember.

Robopocalypse is still in the pipeline, but there's no release date set. Script is currently being rewritten.

The Gershwin biopic is still in the writing process, but there are no solid info on that.

The next official announced project is American Sniper.

The Moses picture is being directed by Ang Lee now, I believe, so we can rule that one that for sure.

The most likely projects Johnny was talking about are American Sniper, Robopocalypse and the new thingie Kushner is writing for Spielberg -which I imagine is the Gerswhing biopic but I've got no evidence to support this.

I thought Spielberg was actually directing the Napoleon series? Could be like Scorsese with Broadwalk Empire, where he directed the first episode....

And the theme for Halo, of course

I dunno, Spielberg didn't direct the first episode of Band of Brothers, The Pacific, United States of Tara, Falling Skies, Terra Nova, Smash, or The River, so I don't see him directing for Halo or Napoleon. But who knows!

Out of all these projects, Interstellar and Moses were easily the ones I was most looking forward to hearing a Williams score for, so it's a shame those are the two that are 100% not going to happen now. Bummer.

Williams is probably one of the first few people Spielberg confides in about possible upcoming projects. If he says there are two or three projects in the works, then there are two or three projects in the works^^. And they could well be projects that haven't been made public yet.

What are the details of the "smackdown"? I've heard of this in a few threads but not heard to what this referred to.

'Smackdown' was just a funny way of putting it, I think. It means that Williams stepped in to score Columbus' STEPMOM in 1998 when Doyle fell ill with leukemia.

Let's not forget about Tintin 2, maybe Johnny was talking about that too...

And I guess this confirms he isn't doing any Pixar films. Expected, but still dissapointing.
