Her is the only surprise there.

I'm surprised Zimmer never got a nomination for 12 Years (not that it deserves it).

Philomena is a nice score although it's full of Desplat's usual mannerisms. Offers nothing new in his career, but it's pleasant enough.

I watched Her last weekend, great film, the minimalistic music worked very well, but I don't quite remember it.

I honestly think Gravity will win.

Hmmmm...

So all are minimalistic scores I guess, with the exception of Williams'...

(I wish the Academy had noticed the Wind Rises score!!)

It seems minimalism, is the recipe for a succesful score these years..

I wonder what will come next...

(it could lead to a total absence of music score in the (far) future)

I don't know if I'd call Newman's score minimalistic, have you heard it?

And Williams' score does have some minimalistic techniques in it! ;)

And yes, they should have recognized The Wind Rises, especially with the film nominated for best animated feature. It's a great score!

I haven't heard Newman's, but I just guessed that it would be in his usual minimalistic style with piano over sustained strings..

and yes, Williams' too feels minimalistic (at least for his standards), but i didn't say it, because there would be many people here that would say how thematically rich it is etc. and wouldn't accept this term for this score..

Well, maybe it's semi-minimalistic.

Gravity ROTFLMAO

You know, i think there is a great possibility this could win!

(especially if it doesn't win in other major categories)

I think Gravity has a shot at winning best picture

Well, it's very Newman. But it's a lot more playful and charming than something like Revolutionary Road.

Nope. 12 Years a Slave will be winning Best Picture.

Congrats to Maestro Williams for his nomination! I have my fingers crossed for his win, as usual! :)

You can still have a thematically rich score with minimalistic works you know.

And Williams has his own style of minimalism as heard in scores like Memoirs or AI. This style is prevalent to a degree, in the Book Thief.

Congrats to Maestro Williams for his nomination! I have my fingers crossed for his win, as usual! :)

I'm no Oracle, but seeing that the film has only this nomination, i think it's highly unlikely.

(Usually nominations in major categories help the winning scores because the jury take a notice of them more)

I suppose, if there is any objectivity in music, this would be the best indeed.

Gravity ROTFLMAO

You know, i think there is a great possibility this could win!

It's the frontrunner, no question about it--it's almost a silent movie, it plays a major role in establishing the overall atmosphere of the film and it gets a lot more noticed than the usual film score. Here's your award, Mr. Price!

If it's not Gravity, then I'm pretty sure the award will go to Her.

Anyway, congratulations to the Maestro for his well deserved nomination. He's still the best!

Oh, aand congrats to Bruce Broughton as well (nominated in the Best Song category). Go Bruce!

maybe it's a bit irrelevant, but i thought to post here the list of nominations from 1994, to see how things "evolved" in 20 years.

Interview with a Vampire (Goldenthal)

The Lion King (Zimmer)

Little Women (Newman)

The Shawshank Redemption (Newman)

Forrest Gump (Silvestri)

Btw, what was Gravity composer Steve Price's involvement in the LotR scores?

I think he was part of the music editing team.

1962 nominations show even better:

Lawrence of Arabia – Maurice Jarre

To Kill a Mockingbird – Elmer Bernstein

Freud – Jerry Goldsmith

Mutiny on the Bounty – Bronislau Kaper

Taras Bulba – Franz Waxman

I'm surprised Zimmer didn't got a nomination for Man of Steel (it totally deserves it).

Absolutely.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was a sound designer. A lot of the throbbing, sub-bass, and whiring effects for the ring, the Great Eye, Dead Marshes, the green beam of light from Minas Morgul etc. sound like Price.

If Williams wins, it'll be HUGE! It'll be his sixth Oscar! It'll be awesome! Yay! There should be shouting from the rooftops and dancing in the streets!

If anyone else wins, I honestly don't care about the Oscars, anyway. They're elitist, and who gives a flip what the Academy thinks. Anyone who pays attention to these awards is a loser.

ROTFLMAO

Yup, the overall winner will be a popular contest mostly voted on my people who don't know a thing about film music.

Being selected by the actual musicians in the academy to be nominated is a higher honor

I think Gravity has a shot at winning best picture

Just looking at the number of nominations it has, "Gravity" or "American Hustle" will likely take the Best Picture Oscar. I wouldn't underestimate "12 Years a Slave" either.

Wow, I just noticed Bruce Broughton got nominated for best original song. Is this his second only Academy award nomination?

Yes it is. Sadly.

The more reason to celebrate his nomination!

I wouldn't be surprised if Newman wins. I gave up trying to figure out the Academy's thought process on the score category. It's all over the place. I'm rooting for Williams, but admittedly it would look weird with his other wins for original score.

Jaws

Star Wars

E.T.

Schindler's LIst

....

..

.

The Book Thief??

It's not being weighted against his prior efforts, it's being weighted against the other scores written for films that came out this year.

Yeah, I've always liked that his original score wins all belong to iconic achievements in his filmography. At this point I'd just be happy to see him reach 50 nominations.
