NOTES

– I believe “Empathy” is a concert arrangement for a theme that isn’t used anywhere in the score.  The opening piano portion DOES appear in the film, but I believe that Spielberg tracked it in (it replaced the ending of “Memory”), I don’t believe it was written for that scene or any other scene.  The ending of “Reprise” seems to be a different recording (at a different tempo) of the same concert arrangement.

-“The Fox” (Reprise 0:00-0:23) is pitched-shifted on the album to end in the same key as the next cue in the track; I don’t yet know what value to use to return it to its recorded speed.

-Reprise (0:23-2:23) appears to be the full intended opening to the end credits.  In the final film it is shortened down to only 47 seconds, and then crossfades into Listen.  The ending of the OST track “In Vivo” sounds like an alternate end credits opening.

Updated no-editing-required mostly-chronological playlist:

  1. 16 Reprise (4:54)
  2. 07 Negotiation (3:25)
  3. 12 Signs (2:37)
  4. 03 Dive (4:37)
  5. 04 Chase (2:14)
  6. 14 Caught (5:56)
  7. 05 Believe (3:35)
  8. 13 Home (3:37)
  9. 02 Memory (4:07)
  10. 09 Celestial (6:50)
  11. 10 Unseen (3:09)
  12. 11 KCXE (5:56)
  13. 15 Disclosure (4:22)
  14. 06 In Vivo (2:49)
  15. 01 Listen (4:08)
  16. 08 Empathy (2:24)

As mentioned above, since “In Vivo” contains the finale cue from the movie and then what sounds like an alternate opening to the end credits, I believe it makes sense to end the playlist with that followed by Listen, which is the next cue used in the film after the end credits opening.

Therefore I think it makes sense to open the playlist with “Reprise” so that you don’t have two versions of the end credits opening near each other.  The track also contains an alternate version of “Empathy”, so if you do open the playlist with it, it is nice to end the playlist with the other version of “Empathy” as a bookend.

Basically, “Listen” “Reprise” and “Empathy” can all be placed anywhere to the listener’s personal preference.  It’s “Negotiation” through “In Vivo” that contain the narrative aspect of the score on the OST album.
