Quartet Records has commented on their original post

... the first official edition on CD. The LP was legitimate, of course.

Where there any Williams or Morricone scores from the 60s or 70s that had an LP but only a bootleg CD?

Many of their titles are limited to 1,000 copies yes, but they have released titles at other quantities, as well as unlimited releases.

Hmmm, could it be John Williams' Heidi?

I don't know if the Label X CD was legit or not

I have a physical copy of Heidi, and as far as I know it's legit. I thought I've seen it advertised on SAE before?

I think Bruce Kimmel (Kritzerland Records) just announced one of the Quartet titles for them?

I don't understand.

Didn't the Missouri Breaks cd had the complete score including some film versions of some cues?

The CD had the re-recording and only a few of the original tracks. I'm right about this, trust me - this will be the first full release of the original film tracks.

Two new releases to be announced on Monday, June 3rd.

Via Quartet's Facebook page

Two new releases will be announced tomorrow Monday. Both are from beloved composers who unfortunately are no longer with us.

One is from the sixties, first appearance on CD of a classy score written by a classy composer with an unforgettable main theme. You'll love this album, I promise.

The other present a world premiere release with a large orchestral score written for an obscure comedy of the nineties, although it could be of the early eighties!

Please let the 60's title be A Shot In The Dark.

The 90s comedy title intrigues me! The movie's obscure, but with a large orchestral score? Hmmmm

Hmmm I wonder if it could be Michael Kamen's Nothing But Trouble?

I saw the film but that was 23 years ago.

Quartet just responded to my post on Facebook. No Mancini.

THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF MOLL FLANDERS
Music Composed and Conducted by John Addison
Limited Edition of 1000 units

moll_flanders1.jpg

Marcel Hellman’s 1965 production of The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders was, like the 1963 Best Picture winner, Tom Jones, based on a well-known piece of 18th-century English literature. But in spite of a mostly A-list cast that included Kim Novak, Angela Lansbury, George Sanders, Vittorio De Sica and Richard Johnson, the film failed to garner much critical or popular success. Directed by Terrence Young (who had recently helmed the first two James Bond pictures), Moll Flanders was a well-crafted and luxuriantly mounted production that fell short of expectations.

The only carry-over from Tom Jones (other than actor High Griffith in a secondary role) was the composer. John Addison had recently won an Oscar for his Jones score, and he applied the same combination of wit and heart to his music for Moll Flanders. A classically trained composer, Addison merged appropriate period flavor with a contemporary sensibility and a wonderful feel for comedy. As one reviewer put it, he managed to make “entertaining bedfellows of the harpsichord and saxophone.” The same writer described Addison’s principal melodic idea for the film (“Lovely as She”) as “a soaring and romantic theme which would not disgrace Max Steiner.”

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, is pleased to present the score for The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders for the first time ever on CD, sourced from the first generation master tapes used for the long out-of print RCA album. The LP assembly was created by John Addison himself with his usual good taste—and includes music that was not heard in the film. The package includes a 16-page booklet, generously illustrated with film stills, with notes on the film and score by Frank K. DeWald.

Although the film is not especially well-known, Addison’s music is sure to delight fans of delectable melody and spirited comedy—whether they’ve seen the picture or not. Get to know Moll Flanders¬¬—she will capture your heart from first measure to last.

CANADIAN BACON

Music Composed by Elmer & Peter Bernstein
Conducted by Elmer Bernstein
Limited edition of 1000 units

canadian_bacon_1.jpg

Quartet Records is pleased to present the world premiere release of a powerful, hilarious score co-composed by Elmer and Peter Bernstein for the 1995 MGM comedy Canadian Bacon. An anti-militarist farce written and directed by Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine, Farenheit 9/11), the film starred John Candy, Alan Alda, Rhea Perlman, Kevin Pollack and Dan Aykroyd.

Moore chose Elmer Bernstein because he wanted the same musical treatment for his film that Bernstein had given to some favorite ’80s comedies (Stripes, Ghostbusters, Trading Places, Meatballs): a serious score that would contrast with the comic intent of the film. Although by the mid-nineties Bernstein was tired of scoring comedies, he agreed to compose the score for Canadian Bacon ¬¬ – in collaboration with his son Peter – because he liked Moore’s ideas.

The Bernsteins provided a muscular, militaristic score, full of leitmotivs, hymns and lots of action music. Canadian Bacon is one of Elmer Bernstein’s great achievements of the ’90s, sadly forgotten due to the failure of the film at the box office. It is music deserving of rediscovery.

The music, conducted by Elmer Bernstein, was recorded at Angel Studios in London. The package includes a 12-page full color booklet with liner notes by Randall D. Larson. A treat for all Bernstein fans!

Both releases are available now on pre-order. The CDs will ship next Monday 10th.

Two new releases coming later this week: three scores on two different CD's. Three composers, two of them unfortunately are no longer with us. Two titles are from the same composer. One is a previously unreleased score, and the other two -paired in the same CD- for the first time on CD (previously on LP). Two of the films have something in common. The three films are from the eighties...

CRUSOE
Music Composed and Conducted by Michael Kamen
Limited Edition of 1000 units

crusoe.jpg

World premiere release of Michael Kamen’s moving, emotional score dated in 1988 for Caleb Deschanel personal vision of Robinson Crusoe, starring Aidan Quinn and Elvis Payne.

Michael Kamen (Highlander, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Licence to Kill, Mona Lisa) provides one of its best efforts: a reflexive, ethnic influenced score dominated by a melancholy melody that reflects the character of Crusoe. The music was performed by The National Philarmonic Orchestra.

Now after spending nearly as long in Michael Kamen’s archives as Daniel Defoe’s castaway did on the author’s remote island, Crusoe has finally been rescued for CD. Its score is presented here in the form the composer originally conceived for its (never-released) soundtrack album. Crusoe remains one of Michael Kamen’s most intimate and evocative works, portraying Crusoe’s island as a state of mind as much as a rugged place for adventure. More importantly, his work showed it was a place where so-called civilized and primitive music could share a common bond of humanity.

The package includes a 16-page full color booklet, and liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, who discuss the film and the score, and also includes interviews with Caleb Deschanel and sound engineer Stephen McLaughlin.

MONA LISA
Music Composed and Conducted by Michael Kamen

CASTAWAY
Original Music Composed by Stanley Myers & Hans Zimmer
Produced by Hans Zimmer

Limited Edition of 1000 units

mona-lisa.gif

Two-on-one CD premiere of two soundtrack albums previously issued on LP by EMI.

Michael Kamen's Mona Lisa (1986) was written for Neil Jordan's stylish crime story about a high-class prostitute and her reluctant driver who descend into the London underworld while forming an unlikely alliance in the process. Kamen's score is infused with two Nat King Cole standards (the eponymous "Mona Lisa" and "When I Fall in Love"), but he also provides excellent suspense cues for scenes of deceit and murder. The soundtrack also contains two vintage Nat King Cole recording, two contemporary pop songs and an excerpt from Puccini's Madame Butterfly.

Stanley Myers and Hans Zimmer’s Castaway (1987) underscores Nicholas Roeg's erotic tale based on a true story concerning a woman who volunteers to be the wife-for-hire to an eccentric writer, seeking refugee on a deserted island for a year. Myers and Zimmer music (although the LP released at his date said only "Original Music by Stanley Myers" and Hans Zimmer was credited in the section of “aditional music”, actually all the tracks were composed by both composers, and produced entirely by Hans Zimmer) offers a psychedelic pop exotica experiment shaped by the sound of the sea, the wind and the forest. The soundtrack program also includes the theme song by Kate Bush and one additonal track by Brian Eno.

This release contains both soundtrack programs as they originally appeared on LP, and has been mastered from first generation master tapes vaulted at Abbey Road Studios in London. The package is rounded out with richly illustrated booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who discusses both films and scores in detail.

Both releases are available now on pre-order. The CDs will ship next Friday 12th.

CRAZY PEOPLE

Music Composed and Conducted by Cliff Eidelman

Limited Edition of 1.000 units

crazy_people.jpg

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, is glad to present the world premiere release of Cliff Eidelman’s delicious original score for the Tony Bill comedy released in 1990, starring Dudley Moore and Daryl Hannah.

Emory Leeson (Moore) is an advertising executive who experiences a nervous breakdown. He designs a series of "truthful" advertisements, blunt and bawdy and of no use to his boss’ firm. One of his colleagues checks him into a psychiatric hospital. Emory goes into group therapy where he meets other patients, such as the lovely and vulnerable Kathy Burgess (Hannah).

By mistake, Emory's advertisements get printed and turn out to be a tremendous success. They include campaigns like: “Jaguar—for men who'd like hand-jobs from beautiful women they hardly know,” and "Volvo—they're boxy but they're good.” Emory is approached in the sanitarium about creating new ads. He insists that his fellow mental patients also be involved and suitably rewarded for their work, transforming the sanitarium into a branch of the advertising industry.

This was one of the first movies scored by the great Cliff Eidelman (Triumph of the Spirit, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Magdalene, Christopher Columbus: The Discovery), who provided a highly addictive score for full orchestra: descriptive, romantic, funny… with winks to George Gershwin. Twenty-three years after its recording, it deserves to be released!

The album contains the complete original score plus several alternate bonus tracks—all sourced from the original session DATs stored in the Paramount vaults. The package includes a 20-page full color booklet beautifully illustrated with film stills and several “crazy advertisements” from the movie. Daniel Schweiger provides his usual thorough liner notes—including an interview with the composer. So be warned: Crazy People are coming!

This release are available now on pre-order. The CDs will ship next Friday 26th.

DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK?

Music Composed by Pino Donaggio
Conducted by Natale Massara
Limited Edition of 500 units

do_you_like_hitchcock.jpg

At last!. Quartet Records and Cinevox are proud to present the CD premiere of Pino Donaggio's terrific Hitchcock homage to Dario Argento's television movie - Do You Like Hitchcock?

Giulio is a film student obsessed with German and Soviet cinema, but his passion for the films of Hitchcock will take him to the site of a grisly murder. Obsessed with his beautiful neighbor Sasha, Giulio is distraught to learn that the girl's mother was slain in a gruesome murder that would fit in a Hitchcock thriller. Knowing that Sasha didn't like her overprotective mother and she had just seen Strangers on a Train, our hero deducts that she made a switch and had someone else commit the murder - but this also means she will kill someone in return. Giulio launches a Vertigo inspired investigation on the streets of Turin and is shocked to learn that he was wrong - it was another Hitchcock film that inspired the plot! Can you guess which one?

Filled with dozens of references to Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, Vertigo and even Marnie, Dario Argento's foray into television is a nice exercise from the giallo maestro, exercising his skills while paying homage to his favorite director. Pino Donaggio's score (his third for the director) is an exciting blend of Herrmann-inspired suspense and contemporary electronics, interspersed with seductive siren-like vocals for scenes of voyeurism. Performed by the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Natale Massara, Donaggio's music for Do You Like Hitchcock? is one of the best television scores to come out in recent years - it's a shame it hasn't been released earlier.

The CD includes the entire score, including Donaggio's unused tribute to Vertigo called "Homage to Hitchcock". Carefully mastered by Claudio Fuiano, the package includes liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who offer an introduction to the film and the score with comments from the composer - and including a track-by-track narrative discussion that will lead you to the end of the mysterious case!

This release are available now on pre-order. The CDs will ship next Friday 26th.

LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST)
Music Composed and Conducted by Pierre Adenot

Eagerly anticipated new adaptation of the classic La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast), directed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf) and starring Vincent Cassel, Lea Seydoux and André Dussollier.

Pierre Adenot (Paris, je t’aime, Les émotifs anonymes) provides a lush and heartwarming score (recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London), full of sweeping and colorful themes for orchestra and chorus.

The package includes a 16-page deluxe booklet, illustrated with film stills and featuring statements by Pierre Adenot and Christophe Gans. Available with two different booklet versions: French and English.

DELIRIOUS
Music Composed and Conducted by Cliff Eidelman
Limited Edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are proud to present the world premiere release of this luscious original score composed by Cliff Eidelman (Triumph of the Spirit, Crazy People, Star Trek VI) for Tom Mankiewicz’s comedy Delirious, starring John Candy and Mariel Hemingway.

The composer provides wondrously imaginative music – including action cues, romance, drama and comedy – creating an impeccably elegant score. After twenty-three years, this album deserves to be released!

Produced for Quartet Records by Cliff Eidelman (from his own DATs), this CD features the complete score in pristine stereo sound. The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by John Takis.

a_time_of_destiny.jpg

A TIME OF DESTINY
Music Composed, Orchestrated and Conducted by Ennio Morricone
Limited Edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Virgin Records/Universal Music Special Markets, presents the long-awaited remastered reissue of one of Ennio Morricone’s best scores of the eighties, comparable in many ways to his masterpiece, The Mission.

A Time of Destiny was a 1988 film directed by Gregory Nava and starring William Hurt, Timothy Hutton, Melissa Theo, Stockard Channing and Francisco Rabal. The story was based on Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino. For this operatic story about war, love, revenge and family, Morricone wrote a radiant, passionate score for orchestra and chorus, featuring one of his most unforgettable love themes (“Love and Dreams”).

Because the film master tapes could not be located, Quartet offers a remastered reissue (with much improved sound) of the original album program released by Virgin Records in 1989, conceived and produced by Morricone with his usual good taste. Fortunately, every major cue is represented on this CD, and only a small number of short cues and variations have been lost. The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Tim Greiving.

fin_de_semana_al_desnudo.jpg

FIN DE SEMANA AL DESNUDO
Music Composed and Conducted by Antón García Abril
Limited Edition of 500 units

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar present the world premiere release of Antón García Abril’s music for the 1974 bizarre Spanish comedy Fin de semana al desnudo, directed by Mariano Ozores and starring Alfredo Landa, Lina Morgan and Máximo Valverde.

The original score was composed by the iconic Spanish composer García Abril (Texas Addio, The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman, the Blind Dead series, Fortunata y Jacinta, Monsignor Quixote), in the same humoristic and romantic style that he employed for many comedies in the sixties and seventies. Although García Abril composed the score for over 300 films during his career, less than ten albums of his film music have been released, so we are delighted to begin to correct this.

Mastered by Claudio Fuiano from the original stereo tapes courtesy of Gruppo Sugar, the package includes an 8-page booklet with Spanish liner notes by Juan Sánchez.

The four titles are available for shipping from now.

Quartet Records is proud to present its four new releases …

PARTNERS
Music Composed and Conducted by Georges Delerue
Limited Editon of 1000 units

partners.jpg

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures are proud to present the world premiere release of the (almost) unused score by Georges Delerue (Jules et Jim, Man, Woman and Child, Platoon) for the buddy comedy directed by James Burrows from a screenplay by Francis Veber. Ryan O’Neal and John Hurt play an “odd couple” of policemen that are ordered to investigate a series of murders being committed in the gay community.

The score was one of the first written by Delerue after he settled in Hollywood, and is also one of the weirdest and, until now, least-known works from his long career. The film, which suffered several cuts in the editing room, was finally released with a total of approximately 12 minutes of original Delerue music and a large number of pop songs and cues from other films produced by Paramount during the same period—by Giorgio Moroder, Dave Frank and Charles Fox, among others. But, having access to all the Delerue recordings (preserved in mint condition in the Paramount vaults), we have discovered that Delerue recorded not just one, but two different scores for the film. Only a few cues were used in the final edit, and many were used in places other than that for which the composer had been originally written them.

For the album, we have rebuilt the score in the best possible way—as Delerue conceived it. We have followed the order of the film and included music for some sequences that were deleted in the editing room.

Romantic, funny, charming, with lots of suspense music, haunting melodies, an unforgettable waltz ... a “new” Delerue has finally come out of the closet 32 years after it was recorded! The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Tim Greiving.

THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS
Music Composed and Conducted by Angelo Badalamenti
Performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra
Limited Edition of 1000 units

the_comfort_of_strangers.jpg

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar are proud to present the first complete release of Angelo Badalamenti’s masterpiece (and his personal favorite score)—The Comfort of Strangers (1990).

Directed by Paul Schrader, written by Harold Pinter (from the enigmatic short novel by Ian McEwan), and starring Chrisopher Walken, Rupert Everett, Natasha Richardson and Helen Mirren, The Comfort of Strangers is a fascinating, even grotesque and unclassifiable film set in a dark and forbidding Venice.

Angelo Badalamenti (Blue Velvet, Cousins, Twin Peaks) provides an elegant combination of Byzantine and Turkish-Arabian music, dominated by a memorable main theme distilling the pure essence of love and death. The score was recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the composer.

Previously issued twice on CD by CAM in Italy, the essential 36-minute album was sequenced and produced by Badalementi himself, but was full of edits and omitted some passages that certainly deserved to be released. This new CD, fully remastered by Claudio Fuiano from the first-generation master tapes, includes the original Badalamenti album plus the complete film score in film order. The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Tim Greiving.

TOM AT THE FARM (TOM À LA FERME)
Music Composed by Gabriel Yared
Conducted by Jeff Atmajian

tom_at_the_farm_2.jpg

The new film directed by Xavier Dolan (Laurence Anyways, I Killed My Mother) is a psychological thriller, based on a play written by Michel Marc Bouchard.

The story is about Tom, a young advertising copywriter, who travels to the country for a funeral. There, he's shocked to find out no one knows who he is or who he was to the deceased, whose brother soon sets the rules of a twisted game. In order to protect the family's name and grieving mother, Tom now has to play the peacekeeper in a household whose obscure past bodes even greater darkness for his "trip" to the farm.

The music has been composed by prestigious Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared (Betty Blue, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Message in a Bottle). Yared provides a score for the thriller that mixes lyrical and romantic passages with intense Herrmannesque touches.

OCHO APELLIDOS VASCOS
Music Composed and Conducted by Fernando Velázquez
Performed by The Euskadi Symphony Orchestra

ocho_apellidos_vascos.jpg

The new film score by Fernando Velázquez (The Impossible, Mama, The Orphanage, Zipi y Zape y el club de la canica) is for a romantic comedy directed by Emilio Martínez Lázaro about the conflicts of the culture clash when a young Andalusian man falls in love with a Basque girl.

Velázquez provides a fresh score, with themes for the comedy and romantic melodies—far from his horror and adventure scores. The music is performed by the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the composer.

PATRICK
Music Composed by Pino Donaggio
Limited edition of 1000 units
Pino Donaggio returns to the genre where everyone loves his music: a supernatural thriller!
This new, haunting and scary score (performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gianluca Podio) was composed by Donaggio (Don’t Look Now, Carrie, Dressed to Kill, The Howling) for the remake of the 1978 classic Australian horror movie: Patrick. Directed by Mark Hartley (director of the cult documentary Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!), and starring Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Sharni Vinson (You're the Next), Jackson Gallagher (Nowhere Boys) and Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under), the new film was produced by the “original” Patrick producer, Antony I. Ginnane.
Following our previous successful Donaggio releases (Do You Like Hitchcock? and Passion), Quartet Records is proud to present the maestro’s latest addition to his library of classic horror scores, one that’s capable of representing the full range of emotions felt by the characters without the film—but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see the film if you get the chance to do so!
The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who discusses the movie, the composer and the score.

MAC AND ME
Music Composed and Conducted by Alan Silvestri
Limited edition of 1000 units
Quartet Records and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are proud to present the world premiere of one of Alan Silvestri’s major symphonic works—an album long overdue for release.
1988’s Mac and Me paid hapless homage to a certain 1982 blockbuster about the adventures of an adorable, earth-bound alien and his young human friend. But what made Mac and Me stand out from other imitators were its hilariously overt product plugs (including the film debut of an iconic fast-food clown), its barely mobile extraterrestrial, and a tone that swung wildly from cartoonish humor to jaw-dropping peril. And one other element of Mac and Me stood out for being legitimately good—its wonderful score by Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Clean Slate, Cosmos).
The exciting symphonic score—conducted by the composer—is an orchestral tour-de-force which brings us back to the glorious sound of American adventure films in the ’80s. It was written in 1988, between Silvestri’s unforgettable scores for Who’s Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Abyss.
Containing the complete score, mastered both from stereo sources courtesy of MGM and the composer’s personal tapes, the CD includes the two pop songs Silvestri wrote for the film. The 12-page full-color booklet includes liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

LA RAGAZZA DAL PIGIAMA GIALLO (THE PYJAMA GIRL CASE)
Music Composed and Conducted by Riz Ortolani
Songs performed by Amanda Lear
Limited edition of 500 units
Premiere CD release of long-awaited giallo score composed by Riz Ortolani.
La ragazza dal pigiama giallo (aka The Pyjama Girl Case) is a somewhat forgotten Spanish-Italian giallo directed by Flavio Mogherini, starring Dalila Di Lazzaro, Ray Milland, Mel Ferrer, Antonio Ferrandis and Fernando Fernán-Gómez. The story is based on an actual crime that happened in Australia: a young girl was found killed on the beach with her face completely disfigured, dressed only in yellow pajamas. This unsolved case became an obsession for Mogherini and when he decided to make the picture one of his demands was that filming had to take place entirely in Australia—something unprecedented in the Italian genre. The 2006 DVD edition of the film, released by the well-known American label Blue Underground, has not only brought the film back, but it has also given it a certain cult-movie halo.
The music composed by Riz Ortolani (Mondo Cane, War Goddess, The Statua, L’Etrusco Uccide Ancora, Fratello Solle Sorella Luna) moves between two different styles: the composer’s characteristic suspense-film sound (as in his superb score for Non si sevizia un paperino)—including a wonderful love theme with the harmonica of Franco Di Gemini—and the cool disco sound of the seventies (with two original songs co-composed and performed by Amanda Lear).
Mastered by Claudio Fuiano, the CD contains the original previously released Cinevox LP program plus five bonus tracks. The package includes an 8-page booklet containing mosaic stills from the film, accompanied by an essay from Óscar Salas, who discusses the movie, the composer and the score.

Mac & Me should've been 2000 units. Even though I would love to own it b/c it is early Silvestri but I won't lose sleep if I miss out on it. I have a feeling some other label might get a hold of it in the future anyway.

Two new releases will be announced later this week:

The first is one of the most famous and iconic scores from the sixties, Oscar winning, and although repeatedly issued on LP and CD, it was always a re-recording. The original tracks – and the complete score – will see the light of day here for the first time! Stay tuned, because it is top-notch – a truly grand release!

The other pairs two scores of the great maestro Ennio Morricone on one CD – a double “sacred and profane” program. One of the scores expands the program issued on an old and hard-to-find edition. The other is one of the most famous and romantic Morricone scores, and has been released several times, especially in some expensive Japanese releases… but this time the audio has been much improved (such as by correcting the switched stereo channels from previous editions).
