The Chronological Film Score Thread

No, but ideally it is the song that was going to be written for the film. It uses the main theme of the film and I like it much, much better than "Another Way to Die".

Well, yes, it's a great song, but only in one's fantasy was it ever going to be in the film :) It was never intended for use in the film, I think it was even written after the fact, IIRC. David Arnold just liked the hook he used in QoS and adapted it for Bassey's song. This, however, was an actual rejected submission that you could have added:

Although I don't care much for rejected submissions, thanks for the info, I don't think I've heard about the Almer song. And yes, Arnold's song was indeed written after the fact, but I don't care that it's not officially a rejected song, I'm just glad he got to write a Quantum of Solace song anyway - that's pretty exceptional.

Let me turn this around: why would anyone put "Another Way to Die" in one's playlist/edit instead of "No Good about Goodbye"? That's fine if you like the former better, but for me personally, the latter is not only superior, it ties in thematically with the actual film score, too, like Bond songs should do. I wish Arnold had a similar chance to finish his song for Die Another Day, too.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

If anyone has a complete cue list or something like that, please let me know.

Notes:

Cues are joined only when they're joined in the film.

Volume usually needs to be increased, rather a lot, for the bootleg tracks.

The score CD is rather heavily clipped, but the bootleg tracks are compressed and have worse sound quality, so take the CD tracks wherever possible.

No idea if the bootleg tracks have the correct cue titles, but I mostly adopted them for this tracklist (along with the original score album titles).

Editing guide:

Main Title / Bella Dreams [The Dream]

BL 1.1 + OST 2 (overlap around 3.5 seconds from last drum beat in BL 1)

Kiss

BL 1.3

Dreamcatcher

BL 1.4

Romeo & Juliet

OST 3

Volturi Waltz

OST 4

Rock Diving

OST 7 1:44-3:17 (use BL 1.17 for clean opening, also for clean ending though you can fade out the OST track too)

[film has other music, presumably tracked]

Motorbike Ride – Part 1

BL 1.18

[film uses either other cue, or an overdub]

Motorbike Ride – Part 2

BL 1.19

[very similar to Pillion Ride]

You’re Beautiful

BL 1.20

OST 8

BL 2.6

You’re Alive

OST 18 but add the two edited sections from BL 2.13 and BL 2.14 (see below)

The Cullens [Never Fail]

OST 19

Marry Me, Bella [Final Woods Scene]

OST 20

End Credits – Love Theme

OST 1

Love Theme (Strings Version)

OST 21

[Place either this or the end credits track at the beginning of the playlist to avoid repetition.]

The Meadow

piano solo track on songs soundtrack album

Bella’s Bedroom (Film Version)

[The BL track says ‘edit’, but I think it’s a different performance of a shorter version; they probably decided to let the music begin a bit later in the scene.]

Selected OST tracks breakdown:

Adrenaline = Bella Dives 0:00-1:16 / There’s a Vampire 0:00-0:47 / Bella Dives 1:16-end

06 Asuncion
07 Brothers
08 Carlotta

I found this on an unmentionable site, and thought was worth preserving here. All credit goes to "misiek-st".

Greatest Story Ever Told (Alfred Newman)

From a post at FSM by Ray Faiola (who was involved in the release)

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=21799&forumID=1&archive=1

In digging through my correspondence on this project, I also found my notes that I sent to Lukas so that he could publish the programming key:

********************

Here is a brief analysis of the prepared UA Records cues as well as a CD "programming key" for THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.

Disc One (UA Records LP Reissue) - Original cue titles

1. "Main Title" - Adaptation, with introduction in different key.

2. Adaptation of "The Magi Reach Bethlehem" and "The Nativity"

3. "Ophal Quarters" and "John The Baptist - Revised" essentially the combined cues as they appear in the film. The original "John The Baptist" was the acapella Hosanna which appears on the first supplemental disc.

4. Adaptation of "Who Do Men Say That I Am?"

5. Adaptation of "Triumphant Return to Capernaum", featuring the first and third portions of the cue. The supplemental disc version features the first, third (though abridged) and fourth sections of the cue.

6. "Cure Me Master" essentially as written for the film, but longer than the dialed-in cue which appears in the final print.

7. Adaptation of "Psalm 136" (a chant which follows the entr'acte as the disciples pray and Judas begins to have doubts about Jesus) and "Palm Sunday Hosanna" (which accompanies Jesus as he rides astride a mule to the gates of the city).

8. "The Last Supper" essentially as it appears in the film, where Jesus passes the cup among the disciples.

9. An adaptation of "Jesus and His Mother", which, of course is from the first act of the picture.

10. This is an adaptation of "Via Dolorosa" and "The Crucifixion". While the cues are condensed, the first 1:46 was not part of the "Via Dolorosa" that survived in the Darby collection. Based on the original conductor part cue listings, and the nature of the music, it is possible it was composed and added after the preview.

11. Handel's "Messiah", which appears in the film in place of Newman's original Resurrection music.

The supplemental discs feature Newman's original music in proper sequence and with original cue titles.

While legal restrictions (as well as fidelity variables) prohibited Ryko from mixing album tracks with original tracks, The following CD programming key will aid the adventurous listener in hearing Newman's score in sequence, with only an occasional repeat of material due to composite cues prepared for the UA album.

Thanks, Jason. I'd actually been meaning to recheck that at some point, since I have acess to the film now, and had been going off memory before.

Is JG's "Night Crossing" in chronological order? I listened to it, yesterday. Boy, is it good!

Yes, both editions are in order. And yes, fantastic.

No problem. It's worth mentioning too that Suo Gan plays 3 times in the movie, so you could theoretically place it in any of those 3 spots. Made sense to me to put it at the beginning, though.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Seconded.

Are you guys really sure it's not in chronological order already? The album for the first film was.

The album is not in chronological order, the song is placed at the end, when it should be placed after "Dragon Training"

Notes for Planet of the Apes

- Many tracks need a proper fade-in and fade-out. (e.g. Ape Suite 1 and 2)

- Take The Escape, Calima, Dinner Source (Film Version) and Main Titles (Synth & Percussion Only) from the Elfman/Burton box.

- The OST has an extended The Hunt and Main Title Deconstruction, both esp. made for the album.

(In my opinion, the MT Deconstruction closes off the score in a better way than the Ape Suite - it sounds more like a proper credits suite.)

- Main Titles (Film Version)
missing the pan-flute part at the beginning (possibly a last-minute addition) – DVD-rip needed

- Dinner Source
Elfman box contains the film version; the LLL is a different mix with different instruments

- Rave Source
Note that this is already fully integrated in CD 1’s track “The Escape” (like it is in the film)

- Calima
Has a more complete mix on the Elfman box; LLL misses an overlay

- Preparing for Battle
the album version/edit seems to be composed of the film take (0:00-0:25) and of the alternate take (0:25-end)
(Alternatively, of course, it’s also possible that the film version was composed of two takes, and LLL put together the alternate from those two takes as well.)

- Rule the Planet Remix
DVD-rip needed of the film's credits if you want to make a dialogue-free version, which is possible but you'll need the opening and ending from the LLL or OST.

(- Camp Raid on the Elfman box is shortened.)

- The Story on the OST has a very, very slightly extended ending, presumably editorially created to end the cue satisfactorily. The ‘alternate mix’ of the cue doesn’t have it.

According to this thread on FSM, the OST is already in order with TWO exceptions:

You have to move "The Final Battle Begins" down to after "We All got Dead People"

and

You have have to move "To The Stars" up to being the first track.

The thread also lists the order if you want the songs mixed in with the score.

Isn't disc 1 in order, and disc 2 all bonus tracks? Unless he doesn't know where tracks 1 and 2 of disc 2 belong?
