The Quick Question Thread

I listened to it closely - a short segment it is just looped, maybe by the music editor.. never noticed that though.

Are you sure it's looped? I can never tell when it's such a short passage.

I assumed the cellos played that ta-tatata a second time! :D

no they didn't - because the woodstick hit is also repeated and the chord that slowly grows does the same soft crescendo

It is def. a loop/edit

i heard there was a alternate of The Fortress of Solitude is this true? and is it available anywhere?

I don't think there is. If there was I'm sure FSM would have included it in the Blue Box set.

Well it's kind of like a future Star Wars movie not using the Star Wars theme(s) or an Indiana Jones movie not using the Raiders march.

What people forget is that different composers will want to do their own thing and directors will as well. There are still people who are upset that the non Goldsmith scored Trek films didn't use his theme.

So I realized that I actually don't have The Terminal on CD. The score came with a special edition of the DVD my brother bought years ago, and it's off with him in California. I'm looking for it on Amazon right now, and the only CD version is THIS.

What's the deal with the cover art? I've never seen it before.

Yeah, I know this cover, it seems to be an European cover art since I've seen this version couple of times here in Slovenia, but only in last 2-3 years. When I bought my copy it had a "normal" cover art we're all used to.

Has Williams ever invoked the Dies Irae?

In addition to those mentioned above, Jurassic Park, "Finding Dr. Malcolm."

according to wikipedia (riiiiiiiight....) it is also invoked in ANH :

"While the plainchant setting of Dies Irae is not the only melody drawn from or inspired by the canon of Western art music, it is the only one that serves a recurring, leitmotivic function. Like many composers before him, Williams uses Dies Irae to evoke a sense of impending doom or tribulation. The four signature notes first appear in the score to Star Wars, notably at the end of the scene in which Luke finds his aunt and uncle dead. It was originally introduced in the "Binary Sunset" scene, but Williams was asked to rewrite the cue, and in doing so removed the references to Dies Irae. Williams reprised the motive for Attack of the Clones in an eight-note (but altered) form to foreshadow the suffering Anakin Skywalker would bring to the galaxy in the scene in which he admits that he murdered the Tusken Raiders. It also appears in Revenge of the Sith during several climactic scenes."

Can someone recommend a good audio presentation of the Dies Irae outside of film scores that I could listen to? I admit that I am really unfamiliar with it, and cannot recognize it in these movies you discuss.

Jurassic Park and E.T. would be my top choices from those. Both are really, really amazing scores, and totally worth every cent of the purchase.

My sentiments exactly.

Check out this terrific FSM Podcast on the subject.

It's my opinion that Williams references the Dies Irae without directly quoting it, like for example, Goldsmith's use of it in the Mephisto Waltz. Still, fun to point out examples of passages I've always known, but never connected directly to it.

which score should i pick up?

.......Jurassic Park 2,....

or none of the above?

Definitely ALL of the above.

just one question, i often hear in discussion of the score for 2 a certain theme/leitmotiv called the "Carnivore Motif" and i would like to know what does this "Carnivore Motif" sound like?
