Andreas,

Thanks for everything you're doing.

From what you said about downloading and copyright, it sounds like some stricter rules may have to be enforced concerning music distribution. No more "PM me for the link to such and such a download" deals?

I bet the removal of avatars would save a lot of bandwidth on the message board.

4. We need some new messageboard rules. Don't post comments to crack a copy protection or somethink. Its not allow in the german law. Only a link to the old CloneCD is illegal and some lawyers that found this link send a really big bill and a declaration that I never post it again. Yes a members post it but the Administrator of this websites and/or ower of the webserver/domain is liable.

I'll draft up some rules for this then. Expect an announcement about them tomorrow.

Andreas,

I fully support your options for the future, whatever they may be. You've given so much over the years, that is the only logical thing for everyone to do -- fully support.

And as to regard to old sites, I do aknowledge that mine (http://johnwilliams.jw-music.net) hasn't been updated for so long, that if it has to go, well, it has to go. Nevermind it. The overall interest of the comunity must come first.

I totally emphasise with Andreas' predicament and I genuinely appreciate his efforts, but if a message board has to die then let it be.

This place is regimented enough, with it's relatively strict set of efficiently policed rules. Any further tightening of of them would all but remove the point of an online forum in the first place. That said, rules are rules and apparently Germany strongly lives by them, but when their laws have a direct affect on my fun, then the place isn't worth fighting for. Because it's an argument that cannot be won.

Such a shame.

I'm of the belief that this place is what it is because of the way it is. Any subtle change (for the worse) would actually turn out to be a fundamental one.

Either that or I'm scaremongering, fearing the worst, coz I've had a drink.

I disagree. This board has very lax rules concerning music distribution. I've seen plenty of places that ban you just for mentioning that you have bootlegged music. If you're talking about the swear filter and discussion bans (politics and religion), then, yes, I agree with you. That's not the issue right now, however.

I really don't see any problem there.

You don't have to say "PM me if you want a CD-R copy of this one" or whatever.

Let's say I mention that I have a complete bootleg of Sabrina (not that I have, mind you), anyone can PM me with a request -- I don't have to say it.

I'll give you a pratical example: Some months ago, we saw the release of Cinderella Liberty on DVD with an isolatated score track. Being a score that I've always loved, I rushed for a copy and made my own complete edition of the score. And being as silly as I am, I posted about it a week or two after the DVD release with the infamous "PM me".

Now, I got a very nice mail from one of the persons involved, with the request to withdraw the post, and the reasons to do so, that are as cristal clear as water. One just never think in those terms.

So I mailed Marc so that he had that one blocked and/or erased, whatever. And I stand for that, and as I promissed to the nice guy who asked for it, I don't think I ever done it again.

And I've got some stuff, everynow and then, and mailed or PMed directly some of the people I know would care for it.

So it's that easy.

Indeed. I have edited my post since you commented, but it is probably still irrelevant to your point.

As a Brit I find it hard to relate to the issues raised by our kind webmaster. I frequent high profile, commercially driven message boards (Empire.com, TotalFilm.com etc) and in those places anything goes - bar racism etc of course. Links to FREE mp3 sites, Torrent sites, Movie Streaming sites the lot, are allowed. There is no bullgarbage (<---lol!) attempt to pull the internet wool over their users eyes.

Sadly for Andreas, Germany apparently doesn't allow things like that. And that pisses me off.

If it stays that way then great.

My apologies for my part in all this. I will stick to any new guidelines that are imposed. I don't want to see the forum go and I don't want any trouble for the people making the forum possible.

I've made my views on copyright/downloading issues crystal clear - I think the laws are completely out of date and there are astronomically worse issues for those idiotic executives to worry about.

However, one thing I do respect is the work and costs involved in running JWFan - Andreas, I salute you. Marc too - you've both done a brilliant job of maintaining this place. In fact, it's the only forum I've ever seen where members are not being banned left, right and centre (I'm an Admin somewhere else and I give up sometimes).

I will quietly stand by my beliefs about sharing boots but I support whatever you have to do to keep this board running Andreas, you're a true gentleman.

In a lot of cases I WOULD pay to get the bootlegged music officially, but I CAN'T because it simply doesn't exist commercially. It's really annoying to be willing to buy something and be unable to.

That is definitly very pleasant. If there's one thing I like in a forum, it is a friendly, helpful community.

Whatever needs to be done to keep everything working should be done.

And Miguel is correct, a little common sense should be applied when discussing you know what.

You said the "W" word! :)

WINDOWS!!!!!!

Man I hate those 'encountered a problem' errors though... it's basically Windows saying that something somewhere has gone wrong but it doesn't have a clue what.

The same from me.

Whatever we need to do or not do, that'll be that.

I find it so amusing that the only time Andreas posts something, is when he is beaming out one of his apocalyptic visions.

Andreas, once again I want to thank you for all the time, money, and effort you put into keeping the site alive. With all the joking, bickering, debating, discussing, and poll-voting we JWFans get up to every day it often easy to forget that this site doesn't come for free, and that someone has taken a lot of trouble to keep it up and running. Whenever I see one of your posts I quite rightly feel humbled. This site truly is a great place, not only because of the information presented, but primarily as a sort of wonderfully bizarre meeting place for some terrific characters who share opinions (often differing ones) on a wide gamut of film, TV and music related subjects. I've come to look forward to my evening perusals of the JWFan forum, to see what John, Greg, Stefan, Neil, Miguel, Hitch, AI (or is it "the" AI?) and all the other characters have got to say, and if for some reason the site had to close down I would honestly feel as if I were losing touch with some dear old friends, even though I have never met any of them and most probably never will.

In short, I love this site. Thanks.

Andreas is the cat,

he knows that.

Without him this board would go mental,

Andreas is the board's; Sentinel.

Andreas is the Man

He's the dude,

so don't piss him off or break his rules,

cause he might just have to ban you, as rude!
