Tanglewood Film Night Aug 22, 2015 [UPDATE: Williams cancels appearance]

Williams will be sharing the podium again with David Newman, but unfortunately it won't be the "real" Boston Pops, but rather the "Esplanade" (freelance) orchestra, as the BSO officially closes its season on Sunday, August 16th.

It also appears that Mr. Williams will NOT be among the Tanglewood on Parade conductors scheduled for August 4th.

If anyone wants to see our beloved Maestro this year, Boston Symphony Hall would be the better place to go (dates to be announced).

I would say it is likely that Williams is scheduled to record either Star Wars or the Spielberg picture late July/early August and that is why he will not be performing with the BSO. It is good to see he is doing the concert in what is likely a busy summer for him.

I was wondering when they were going to announce his Boston dates. I went to see him up in Boston two Springs ago, in May, and it was a fabulous concert with a full Williams program. I am guessing they are not doing that concert this year? Bummer, I was really looking forward to it. Regardless, I will be there for this one if it's his only show on the East Cost in 2015.

Why are you assuming he's not doing it next year? He's done a concert in May/June in Boston every year for, well I dunno, at least 10+ years straight!

Tickets for that concert always go on sale in December!

And yea, it was super fun when you came 2 years ago!

Women in Antiquity? Sounds like a blast!

I'll send you a message on FB as soon as I learn they've gone on sale :)

Won't he be recording the Star Wars score around this time? Just cancel all the concerts, lock him in a room with pad/pencil and the final version of The Force Awakens, give him food and water and don't let J.J. Abrams or any of the producers have a say in anything.

They probably have a cut by now that is suitable for scoring. The effects probably aren't done at this stage, but with pre-visual effects, they can easily create a rough cut of the film for Williams to view.

So why say it'll be the "Esplanade" when the program here clearly states that it'll be the Boston Pops?

Because the boston symphony ( which 98% of the bso are in the pops) are going on a european tour in late august, so the program is cut short this year, the last real bso performance being august 12 i think

Also, I'm not sure if any of you are donors and get on the pre-order list, but the Pops spring schedule for 2015 has still yet to be set. It could be they are holding out to see if Williams will come or not, but they won't say.

I guess he's working on Steven Spielberg's untitled cold war thriller first (it's gonna be released in October). It's likely he's writing that one right now and will record this spring. Then he'll dive into Ep7 all summer long and will probably record in September. Of course it's all just my own speculation.

They don't conduct at the same time. At the one I went to two years ago, Williams opened and closed, and Newman did a Pink Panther tribute in the middle.

Ok I have a few questions about Tanglewood fro those who have attended these concerts before. I'm sure I could find those answers if I searched though this and especially previous threads, but that would take quote a while.

1 - When it comes to getting there from Europe, is Boston Logan Airport the most logical/closest/cheapest one?

2 - How hard is it to actually get to Tanglewood. From what I've read over the years and from what Google Maps tells me, it's pretty remote and hard to get to if you dont own a car.

3 - Accommodation. Are there decent and affordable hotels in the area?

4 - Apart from the concert, is there actually anything else to do there? There don't appear to be a lot of restaurants there.

5- This is a big, open air venue. Obviously with amplified sound. How close can you actually get to the podium? Is the audience noisy? Do you get warned if you try and take a picture?

6- The concert will have two conductors. Typically how much does John Williams do at these concerts? 50%?

1 You can google your own pricing, but you can choose between Logan in MA or JFK in NY.

2 If you can drive it's not "hard", you simply drive on roads to get there :P If you don't drive, you're kinda fucked, cause it's in the middle of nowhere. You'd have to pay a taxi or take a bus. There might be a train / bus combo you could do.

3 There are hotels everywhere, but when Marcy and I went two years ago, we just used AirBNB.

4 Not much in that immediate area, no. It's really in the middle of nowhere. I can't think of anything exciting to do. Maybe others here will have some more knowledge of that.

5 If you wanted to be close to the stage, you should have bought tickets the moment they went on sale. All the close seats will be long sold out by now. Don't worry about the whole "open air venue" thing - You can get very close to the stage! Only the $22 lawn seats are huge and in the open air. In front of the lawn is a covered area with normal seats that is just like going to any other venue.

6 I'm sure it's different every time. When I went two years ago JW did the bulk of the concert, but David Newman conducted a Pink Panther tribute and one or two other pieces in the middle of the show

It honestly wouldn't take long at all. All you have to do is go to the search page, type in "Tanglewood", and select "titles only", and you're done. A 10 year old could figure it out.

I have bought one Tanglewood Aug 22 (Section 2) ticket yesterday for back-up reasons, should there be no Boston May concert happening.

I'm still hoping for Boston though + have already booked airline&hotel ....but if anyone will be interested in that Tanglewood ticket just let me know.

I drove a couple of hours from NYC to Tanglewood in the Summer of 2010 and the way back was quite an experience.... Almost hit 17 deers in the dark of night..! Some seriously freaky sh*t.... I would recommend spending the night in Albany or somewhere closer to Tanglewood.

FYI the Hollywood Bowl season has just been announced and this year there's no John Williams concert programmed. David Newman is conducting his own annual Movie Night concert on Sept 6, btw.

Back to Tanglewood, on the FSM board someone says that the BSO will premiere a new Williams work on August 4 (looking for more info right now).
