{"id":23,"date":"2011-08-13T12:20:33","date_gmt":"2011-08-13T12:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/filmmakerb.com\/jwfan\/?p=23"},"modified":"2011-08-13T12:20:33","modified_gmt":"2011-08-13T12:20:33","slug":"john-williams-to-premiere-work-at-summerfest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwfan.com\/?p=23","title":{"rendered":"John Williams to Premiere Work at SummerFest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/news\/2011\/aug\/13\/La-Jolla-Music-Society-SummerFest-John-Williams\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/media.signonsandiego.com\/img\/photos\/2011\/08\/12\/John_Williams_AP100616088900_16767049_1_r620x349.JPG?75d51d0aea2efce5189afce216053cbc530c46a8\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The genesis of \u201cQuartet La Jolla\u201d was a request by SummerFest music director Cho-Liang \u201cJimmy\u201d Lin, who encountered Williams while performing at Tanglewood, that Williams write a piece for Lin\u2019s California festival.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Williams took the idea under advisement, and as he was already writing a harp concerto for the Boston Symphony, he decided to experiment with the harp in a chamber context that also included violin, clarinet and cello. He wrote two movements and then set the project aside until one of Lin\u2019s associates applied more pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been pretty regularly visiting Chicago Symphony to conduct every year for the past 10 years or so, and two or three years back, John Yeh, who played principal clarinet at Chicago, came in the dressing room and said, \u2018I hear you are writing a piece for Jimmy Lin and it has a clarinet in it. I hope you are going to finish the piece.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd at that point, I had no idea whether I was going to have time, or energy, or any of the required things, and he said, \u2018Oh, please finish it.\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yeh badgered Williams again the next year, and finally Williams completed the piece. \u201cThe creation of this little thing has taken place over a half-dozen years or so,\u201d Williams said, with a tinge of amazement in his voice.
