J.J. Abrams talked about working with John Williams in an interview<\/a> for WIRED that will be part of the magazine’s next issue. Here’s the full Williams-related excerpt:<\/p>\n

“Oh my god! First of all, forget his talent and his achievement. As a person, he\u2019s the guy you want to know more than anyone. He is the sweetest soul I\u2019ve ever met. He\u2019s like this jazzman who became one of the greatest composers of all time. He literally calls you \u201cbaby\u201d! Like, \u201cHey, baby.\u201d He calls me \u201cJ.J. Baby.\u201d I waited all my life to meet someone who would call me that!<\/p>\n

He works in pencil. You go to his home and listen to him play notes on the piano, and while you\u2019re listening, you extrapolate what it will be like when you hear the melody with an orchestra. It is unforgettable, a truly miraculous thing to behold. He has every one of his scores leather-bound. I was like, \u201cDo you mind if I \u2026?\u201d He goes, \u201cNo, go ahead!\u201d So I pulled out the\u00a0Jaws<\/em>\u00a0score, and sure enough, there it is, in pencil on paper:\u00a0baaaa-bum, baaaa-bum<\/em>. You\u2019re like, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what he wrote!\u201d It\u2019s as if you\u2019re hanging out with Mozart, who happened to score your favorite movies.<\/p>\n

I know everybody knows this, but when you actually think about what he\u2019s composed, it is as important as any work ever done on any of those movies. When you think about\u00a0Superman<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Raiders<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Jaws <\/em>and\u00a0Close Encounters<\/em>\u2014which came out the same year as\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u2014and then the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0movies? He is just superhuman. It\u2019s unbelievable that he is as brilliant and yet as modest as he is. It\u2019s just an amazing thing to get to know that guy.”<\/p>\n
